And it doesn’t look like humans have no magic, just that theirs is different, and mostly inaccessible to themselves, and maybe they have a much smaller amount than ponies. That’s why the sirens said the human world didn’t have “Equestrian” magic, specifically.
Just like Sea-Ponies are ponies that have evolved to live in the sea, so too are Sirens just Windigoes that have evolved to live in the sea. Of course, hateful ponies are hard to find in the sea, so they developed a voice that could ensnare any passing ships.

Seriously though, in the comics, he’s already ancient. This is the first time we’ve seen him in his prime, as it were. It seems like this even predates the alicorn sisters, because no mention of them was made at all, unlike in Tirek’s story.
Perhaps, at least when this happened, he wasn’t one for warts-and-all portrayals.

At any rate, looking at his facial features, beard or no beard, he looks very young. Also his coat is bluish, rather than the white of his later years.
