Seniors are varied. Most of us were 17. I was 18. Before the ‘80s, I could’ve bought my peers beer. ;3
Off-topic, apologies. X3
I’m afraid the reference escapes me.
The “he has no character” argument is technically false, but at the same time slightly true. When he first appeared, his main characteristic is that he was a nice guy who liked to play guitar. With that alone, I wouldn’t say he is a terrible character, just uninteresting. That is what a little jarring is when people call him “douche” or “asshole” when he is far from it. Think about when he danced with Twilight. He could have maybe pretended he didn’t know her, could have distanced himself, etc. But instead, he dances with her how she was.
Again, I can’t say he is the most interesting character out there, but he’s far from the worst; and for those who do think he’s a bit bland, there is always fanfiction, you can always try to make something interesting out of him, whether it’s shipping with Twilight or Sunset, somepony else, or just a stand alone interpretation.
By the way, some people already know this but Flash Sentry is voiced by Vincent Tong, the same guy who voices Blueblood and Donut Joe.
Yeah, I guess you could say it was an Anti-Flash Phenomenon… (I wonder if anyone will get that reference)
Just like many of the Prince Charmings, character-wise, to their respective Disney Princesses.
(Gloats at their inferiority)
You Flash Sentry haters are too darn blind or too darn short-sighted to notice, anyway. And I say, “Your Anti-Flash Sentry movement has been dissolved before it was even thought of.”
(Gloats some more)
BREAK IT DOWN!
Foodfight.
/shudder
What a colossal mess that was.
I guess one of my problems with some of the people who dislike this ship is that I sometimes feel like they’re moving the goalposts. Again, some, not all of them.
What I mean is that Flash is usually accused of having too little character. Well, as far as I can tell, he has about the same amount of characterisation as Soarin. Then when Rainbow Rocks came out, they suddenly disliked him for being a jerk to Twilight, i.e. he has the “wrong” character. And then it doesn’t count anyhow, since his jerkishness was a product of the Dazzlings’ influence. Fair enough, but doesn’t that make the whole disliking him for being a jerk irrelevant as well?
There were a few moments where I honestly felt like they were mainly looking to justify an already existing animus.
Yeah, it’s been less “controversial” and more “insightful” than anything. At least for me.
Actually, you caused far less controversy than I would’ve expected under this image; there isn’t even any “kill it with fire” comment anywhere. I’m not even going to make my standard “leak from the season 5 finale” joke for fear of stirring something up in what’s been, so far, a rather peaceful thread.
Probably helps to be the first comment. XD
Most Don Bluth films are. XD
That movie was painfully random.
Yeah, I guess the animation in that film is at the very least more appealing to the eye than Foodfight.
>A Troll in Central Park
Aw, c’mon.
I never thought about that before, but yeah I can accept that. While that does add new insight, he still had little focus in that film. To be fair though, he was not the main focus so I can also understand, even though it would have help if there was even slightly more genuine interaction.
The film does have problems, let’s not pretend it doesn’t, but for what we got with it, it could have turned out MUUUCH worse. At least it’s watchable which is more than I can say for films like A Troll In Central Park or Foodfight.
I disagree to an extent on the first film. The reason his help in particular was useful was because presumably, in that world he knew Sunset Shimmer better than anyone; as such he was able to figure out what she was up to as the situation was developing. There are aspects of that which could have been better shown, but alas, short movie.
I should also mention that the reason for this story choice was due to an analysis I made awhile back. I think one of the biggest problems with Flash is how is presented in Equestria Girls. As much as I like him, let’s face it: he was pretty pointless in the film, existing only to be someone Twilight crushes on. He did little other than help clear and obstacle for Twilight and even then, he could be replaced by just about any other character like the Humane5. So as a result, it’s pretty hard not to list him as one of the film’s problems. He wasn’t that much better in Rainbow Rock either but at least he had a reason to be included since his music interest was established in the first film.
I’m curious to see how well the pairing is perceived if those connections never happened, as well as my own spin on the character.
That is one of the problems I have considered with the ship as well. Just like you said, it’s not impossible but it can be distracting. I have been in the process of writing a Flashlight story and I have asked myself “How much more genuine can the relationship feel if it was the pony counterpart, maybe to the point of not ever meeting the human counterpart?” So being the experimental “Alternate Universe” writer I tend to be, the story I’m writing (which is a sequel to another story) features this kind of relationship. Equestria Girls did not happen (well, it did but drastically differently with Twilight never going to through the mirror) and from there the relationship grows gradually and more realistically; they don’t just meet and fall in love, they start out mutual associates before becoming friends through mutual interests and hobbies and eventually beyond that point.
By the way, that “falling in love with a set of identical twins” reminds me of a fic where Applejack gets involved with both Flim Flam brothers. I’m not gonna lie, I kind of liked it. :>
The main hangup with pony Flash is that it feels a bit weird for Twilight to like both versions of the guy at once. I suppose I’d liken it to falling in love with a set of identical twins. Certainly not impossible, but perhaps a bit questionable.
That said, I have favorited most pony Flash/Twilight shipping fanart on this site, so I must not have any big problems with it.
Of course. But the same can be said for a lot of other ships as well, especially for the background ponies whose personalities are mostly defined by the fandom. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, since some of the interpretations are pretty interesting, if a little odd sometimes. And that is not to say that I’m opposed to multiple shippings for one character; While Soarindash is my favorite ship for RD, I’m open to other ships involving both characters. I’m even willing to accept the pairings as simply friends.
Again, while I like Flashlight, I do prefer them as ponies. This is ironic when you consider that pony!Flash is even more of a blank than his human counterpart, further validating the “crack shipping” as you say. I like characters like this though because for a fanfiction writer like me, it gives me more freedom to work with; I can give him a personality, interests, weaknesses, and etc to fit the story that I’m writing.
Grogar: Would you keep it down?! Smoozie and I are trying to sleep!
and i hate hasbro for doing it.
