“Popular” is a terrible word for this graph. Cupcakes is (probably still) more well-known than anything else on here, but most people wouldn’t list it as their favorite. I’m guessing most of its votes were just default votes from people who hadn’t read anything else.  
Would be interested in seeing an updated version, considering this is about 11 months old.

OK, I see Cupcakes now… I still want to know where Rainbow Factory ranks.

Am I the only one who couldn’t read Progress anymore after Luna Eclipsed? I mean, Progress Luna is closer to Fluttershy 2: Electric Scootaloo, and especially with earlier chapters I can’t see Royal Canterlot Voice Luna acting that way.  
Then again, I feel this way about plenty of fanfics that tried to characterize pre-Season 2 Luna, or tried to do world building, that seemed obsolete and dated by now.

popularity has nothing to do with quality. people usually have bad tastes as they don’t share yours.
 
in that regard, cupcakes and my little dashie are probably the most popular as every brony know of them even withour reading them.
 
as for quality, dangerous business is probably one of the most epic fanfic there is.

Ok, I’m not gonna say MLD is good or bad, but in term of popularity, it should be much higher than that.

Eh, it’s hard to rate Chrys as ‘bad,’ they feed on love mang, she’s just loony and desperate. The individual changeling fics sprinkled about I’ve liked a lot. Most of the Chrysalis-centric fics are either “turns into Fluttershy after landing” or “Is a bloodthirsty Bride of Dracula” and both of those seem completely at odds with the finale for different reasons. I don’t think we’ve seen a truly sinister antagonist yet, Chrys’ takeover was mostly bloodless bravado and the element of surprise, though Diamond Tiara has the potential for such if she doesn’t get her bitchiness checked. I can see her and Scoots becoming like Superman and Lex Luthor.
 
Speaking of comedy fics, here’s another good one.

I just remembered liking My Little Alicorn, surprised at no votes for that either. I thought Pinkie entering her own mind was pretty awesome. Only problem I have with MLA is Blueblood’s segment feels like it should have come up sooner, or ran concurrent with the climatic reunion between the princesses. His coup being a bit of an epilogue kind of ruined the flow. That’s basically the only universal criticism at all I can really level against it.
 
For shipfics Shipping and Handling is probably one of the best. And once again Pinkie’s chapter is just awesome.  
I mostly don’t do ship because some fan-favourited pairings just seem to me like they would never work at all and they would probably make better bitter rivals/mortal enemies, so much OOC is required. But seeing those couplings come about from actual in-universe meddling is kind of funny.  
Also crackship is fun too so long as it isn’t a serious attempt to actually put’em together. I’ve read a couple DERPBLOOD fics that were funny but can’t remember their names. (since there’s no separate track/fav function on FiMF they’re lost in a sea of tracks.)  
They should have a truncate search option, where you see only titles with character pictures, and roll-down descriptions in case you’re looking for a specific story but can’t remember the title. You could stack a TON of stories onto a single search page that way and it would heavily reduce site load, and make it waaaay easier to dig up old links.
 
Also surprised at the lack of Equestria Total War since there were some grimdark fans voting on this it seems. I find that way better constructed than PH, and also the grimdark elements are done far better and feel more realistic, at least the pony war/disease bits. Although I think everyone saw Spitfire’s death coming as soon as she began tropedropping in the presence of Dash. You totally killed yourself there, Spits. I guess there aren’t many warnerds and strategy gamers around in the fandom to appreciate all the random history buff nods and battle tactics. Plus, Derpy becomes a crazy awesome hardboiled one-eyed general, what ain’t to love about that? (although I think she got off light with offing the three griffins (personally it doesn’t seem written like the other two were dealt with lethally though only Nikolai, considering the nature of the fic I think it would have been more descriptive if all 3 had been killed but she just murdered the one she saw as the ‘leader’ of the band) the CMC were tagging around with. It feels like the CMC should have complained a lot more, or at least lost respect for her and abandoned the militia for the Canterlot wing. Felt like they suddenly gave no fucks bout their traveling companions biting it.)  
oh also it seemed weird she would allow the goofy honourable warrior griffin to kill himself. That scene just seemed to go wrong and winds up feeling somewhat surrealistic.

Well if you’re looking for Slice of Life and lighthearted comedy, go to FIMfiction. They ALWAYS have a few slice of life stuff featured there, and most of it is at least decent. Twilight Goes to Bed, Pinkie Pie Learns a New Word, Pinkie Pie Watches Paint Dry… Good stuff overall, and unlike FoE they only need twenty minutes to tell the story.

Huh, I was looking at Transcend, which looked interesting, but I couldn’t get Chrysalis shipping (any bad-guy shipping really), but I’ll give it a shot.
 
Really, any of these poll suggestions I don’t feel the nerve to read cause I’m not interested in any grimdark, dramatic adventuring; I just find it silly in the context of ponies. I often enjoy more comedic, slice of life stuff. Strangely, the ones I like most involve the Princesses, don’t know why.  
I hope this doesn’t make me some sort of ponyfiction hipster; that’s not a title I want to exist.

@sixtyfour215 Progress is about Princess Luna trying to catch up on how much life has changed in Equestria during her absence. I haven’t read it so I can’t comment.
 
Through the Eyes of Another Pony is defined by the fans as “a self-insert done right”. I strongly disagree.
 
That aside, I’ve read Fallout:Equestria, Past Sins, My Little Dashie and Cupcakes too. Suffice to say I did not like them.

Oh, Misfits is good too, for turning gender tropes on their heads.

If you like FoE and want a good sidefic, read Heroes on Fimfiction. It’s just as good as the original.
 
And Transcend needs a lot more love. Only fic that makes Chrysalis a sympathetic character and still keeps her in character.

Also I think Antipodes would have been a lot higher if author’d hurry up and finish the damn thing, then set it aside for error-finding. Some of the areas like the airship battle are over in the blink of an eye. Maybe tap a battle writer to rewrite those portions.

I am both surprised and pleased as Berry that Project Horizons is disliked by as many FoE fans as myself. It has so much potential leaking through its pores yet scraps it all to try and be as stupidly grimdork as friggin’ Warhammer. Hell, probably worse since it seems it wants to force people reading it to cry for no damn reason. LOLOLERRYPONY RAPED, ERRYPONY DIED. It’s like the Lifetime/Oprah channel take on a Warhammer universe. “HOLD EVERYTHING, OUR HEROINE BUCKED UP AGAIN, WE NEED ANOTHER GOOD CRY! COME ON EVERYPONY LET IT ALL OUT!”  
That AU of FoE is sorely in need of a couple true HotBlooded hero types to set things right. Presumably with gigantic sideburns stretching down to their hocks and eyebrows that pierce through their helmets. Ponified Tetsuya Tsurugi and Kazuya Ryuzuki maybe? With Dorothy Catalonia as love interest hacker/lockpicker and Saiyuki as the resident medic/Flutterclone? Bitch’n! Yeah that would certainly solve whatever problems Littlepip missed, up to and presumably including eldritch horror dragons that shot 2 kilometer-wide beams of fire from their seven mouths. ;Þ
 
Sins isn’t THAT bad but it certainly doesn’t deserve to be anyone’s favourite. It’s like someone is trying to pack in as many woobie tropes as possible in a single fic. It does make many Sue-y mistakes though, both with Nyx and with attempts later on to un-sue-i-fy. (which actually wind up drawing the spotlight on her closer)

Not even awful, I don’t think. It FORCES too much ‘omgcuet’ at you to be truly awful. It’s more like some B-movie guilty pleasure grimdork version of 3.5. Like you feel dirty and scummy reading it but still enjoy it for some reason.
 
I’m kind of surprised at the lack of comedy fics like End of Ponyville showing up. That would have been my vote just because I know so many others would vote for FoE. Either that or that one Starcraft crossover series. Twilight went nuts and made clones of herself Templar-style, then splitched a Cerebrate with sheer insanity. Celestia and Kerrigan are besties and meet up in Marx-esque obvious disguises at Pony Joe’s secretly. Luna is the universe’s worst detective. Rainbow Dash taught a Leviathan to SONIC RAINBOOM . The HSQ is out of the feckin’ galaxy.
 
Also surprised at not a single vote for Transcend which was pretty much the only respectable OC/Chrys ship to come out of the madhouse that was the S2 finale deluge. Also no Trixie fics up there either, not even ‘Lunaverse.’ It seems like everyone taking this poll only reads what ‘epic major teary adventure fics’ ponychan recs they read.

Uh, Allegrezza is shipping. And pretty good shipping, to be honest. Although the plot suffers from a bit of stagnance, the romance is very well written.
