By the image I can only assume this person had a very difficult family life. In his/her vision, the author´s growing place became an inescapable trap, contrary on how sweet and tender could be seen from the perspective of people outside the family nucleus.
 
Usually this type of environment turns the person into a sociopath incapable of finding a stable couple due the constant rejection and hatred toward a paternal image.
