That’s like comparing jaywalking to homicide.
Everybody bitches because it’s just plain bad writing.
The solution to this dilemma is obvious, Twilight should not have been in this story. It was an Applejack story to begin with, Twilight served no purpose. The need to prevent her from using magic would not have existed if she had not been there in the first place.
Barring that, they could have given a better reason for her not using her magic such as having the Bulls not doing blatantly illegal things and instead skirting around the edge of the law and manipulating it to their advantage. This would have had the added benefit of making the ending more satisfying since the bulls using legal tricks and manipulation would have made using those same sorts of tricks to stop them more “fair”.
Precisely, but now that she has her own kingdom, Twilight has the confidence to make these awful decisions completely on her own. DX
Heck, to Celestia’s defense(not much though, some of her in-show choices with 0 character are far worse then anything the comics have ever done, like Crystal Empire and Twilight’s Kingdom) she only told Twilight not to talk to them about the magic transfer. It was Twilight’s choice to keep them in the dark about Discord completely. It was no doubt Celestia’s intention of course, but it just goes to show how equally messed up the two of them are that Celestia doesn’t even have to tell Twilight to not think about her friend’s safety.
I guess because they usually try to cover it up with pomp and praise and magic and cuteness. And to her detriment, they didn’t even try this time.
Whenever I think badly of Twilight(which is basically all the time), there’s a niggling thought I’m wrong for it.
But then something like this occurs again and that thought chokes on its own tongue.
Then again, she did so under the instructions of the ‘wise’ Celestia, who nearly let an entire kingdom fall not once, but twice.
Why? This is Twilight after Twilight’s Kindgdom but before Rainbow Rocks, this is perfectly in character for Twilight.
For all the people complaining about how they are writing Twilight…
This is the same Twilight who didn’t warn her friends about Discord’s betrayal and never got criticized for that. The same Twilight that was hypocritical and holier
In other words, there is almost no significant difference between this Twilight and in-show Twilight. I don’t like it either, in fact i hate it, but its simply featuring Twilight at her worst period. Considering she was rewarded with a giant crystal castle for her actions in Twilight’s Kingdom and prior, the fact she is acting more holier then thou and hypocritical then ever should surprise no one.
…so in other words, why is ANYONE surprised by Twilight’s personality here? I mean its not like its OOC of her during this exact time period, its merely aggravating our over-inflated view of Twilight.
And about this not being a proper AJ story, this is just another example of how there can’t be proper character stories if they never address the elephant in the room….Twilight’s personality and role, and Celestia’s agenda for her. So why do this? Why write this?
(throws hands up in the air) I don’t have a clue. Its not rational, and it feels corporate induced, although I don’t know if this story in particular is the ‘result’ or merely the ‘response’. If someone can explain to me why the same writer of Twilight’s Kingdom is the same writer who wrote Rainbow Rocks, despite them having completely contradictory themes, I might be more enlightened. Unless the writers and the guys at corporate are currently having a war with each other over the direction of MLP, I don’t have a clue.
AJ stood up for the town at a point when no one else did; kept things moving with the resistance; as well as lead the group with a plan that she came up with.
AJ took the lead like Twilight did in the first four comic issues, but it was still an arc that the other five could take part in. Why won’t they help? I fail to see your complain.
And yet the comic failed to deliver an AJ story, the only thing she came up with was a very contrived plan to foil a contract and manage to convince Twilight to use her magic.
Also, destroying a town, pillaging their food (for months) and arson is NOT petty criminal at all.
Except that she never had to do that.
She already used magic to incapacitate foes without hurting them.
Twi, I love you, but you are a terrible friend. I’m confiscating your friend license until you re-graduate friend school.
As a setup for what was ostensibly an Applejack story, it would have served its purpose. Get the big macguffin out of the way early to clear the way for the main character to do their own thing.
The fact that the resolution pretty much totally failed to deliver on the setup is another matter altogether, though.
How about just something?
This isn’t like Celestia, who is implied over and over again to be oh-so ufing powerful she can’t swat a fly without wiping out a continent, Twilight didn’t bother to so much as restrain them.
That’s a lot less solid, don’t you think?
I don’t know. Not instantly bringing down what amounts to the full wrath of God on a handful of petty criminals seems like a pretty reasonable approach to me.
Not that it makes the resolution any less muddy. It would have been WAY better and made a lot more sense if Twilight had just stayed in the background and let Applejack finish the job herself. But the idea that Twilight isn’t willing to go full Tirek-stomping mode on every random jerk she meets is a solid enough concept for me.
I have enough rage for both.
“2. The writers make Twilight explicitly state that she’s not going to use her super magic to instantly save the day in a complete OOC moment because of stupid reasons.”
“3. Therefore fans should just accept and eat it, because clearly the writer couldn’t come with something plausible.”
Nice try.
Then Twilight instantly uses her magic to save the day after not doing so for very contrived reasons that make her appear to value stupid customs over the lives of others and her friends
The problem is that the writer’s idea to keep twilight from instantly saving the day is very poorly thought out and kinda stupid
Really its cook who should be fired considering this and reflections.
Gotta earn that ‘drama in the comments’ tag.
