I said the same thing after the season 3 opener. At this point, I’ve lost faith in the writers to give him any meaningful character development. They’ve shown they have the ability (Scootaloo has a potentially permanent disability), it just seems as if they don’t want to. So while I hope they develop Spike’s character more, I expect they will turn him more into a perpetual gag character (Testing Testing 1, 2, 3).
I guess I’m just cynical.
I feel like there’s still hope. I certainly didn’t expect the Equestria Games episode to basically be entirely about Spike, let alone ending with Spike displaying expert platforming skills and saving the entire stadium of ponies with one giant firebreath.
Wow, really? I can at least sort of understand the reasoning for thinking Spike and the main 6 aren’t that chummy what with the occasional Spikeabuse sprinkled throughout the show, but saying Spike’s fire isn’t magical and can’t teleport matter is definitely another tier of incomprehensible. That’s like saying RD’s wings doesn’t let her fly.
People insist that their headcanons are Holy Canons of Show Bible all the time. I’ve seen one puffed-up artist was going around other artists’ art, comics and animations, and comment on every single one of them that Spike’s Fire Breath isn’t magical and can’t teleport things.
I just ended a “discussion” with someone who insists that Spike isn’t close with AJ and the others based on his personal interpretations of the show and that any interaction between Spike and the main 6 only shows that they’re not really friends, despite episodes like Dragon Quest etc, so this was a nice comment and idea to read.

Good idea for an episode.
Not like his friends just asking him for help and he begrudges it. No. Instead, he begins his day with a bowl full of gems and a stack of comic books by his chair, and plans on doing nothing but sunbathing, reading, and snacking. However, as he flicks through the pages of the latest issue of The Power Ponies, Spike notices that one of his closest friends are having trouble doing something, so he goes to see what’s wrong and offers to help them out. This happens with everypony. Each of his friends (except Pinkie) are at first unsure of accepting his help because they know he’s supposed to be having a day off and doing what he wants to do, but Spike insists that he wants to help.
So over the course of the day, Spike has one-to-one interaction with everypony as they work together to get a certain task done. He learns new things about them (to his surprise), and he has a good deal of fun and laughter just by being around his friends. Once he’s finished helping one pony, Spike goes back to his chair to kick back again, but soon sees another pony who needs his help, starting the cycle again.
The last pony is Pinkie Pie, who just appears out of nowhere to ask Spike directly for help. Spike, after getting his breath back, explains that he’s supposed to be having a day off. Pinkie says ‘Oh, I thought you were having a super-helpful-dragon day’ and innocently points out that Spike has been helping everyone else out so she thought he wouldn’t mind helping her. Spike, at risk of losing his breath at the clear logic Pinkie is using, realises that he has been helping everyone else out so it would be fair to help Pinkie, too. Besides, he can relax later.
Turns out Pinkie needs a baking assistant to finish the bakery’s orders for the day, and to provide snacks for a short-notice get-together. Pinkie has made only so much progress, but “I’m running out of time and I might not be done unless I sing a song with somepony or somedragon!”
“Huh?” Spike’s brow furrowed. “How does that-
”–Pinkie spontaneously breaks out into song while mixing batter-
Spike and Pinkie have a duet, with Spike gradually getting more into it as the song picks up. Pretty soon, it looks like the cakes and cookies are making themselves as everything comes to life: from the ingredients coming together to the finished goods leaping into little boxes for delivery – and for the short-notice get-together!
Towards the end of the episode, Spike is a little shocked to see that the sun is starting to set and that he didn’t really spend his day off relaxing like he first planned. But strangely he’s not mad about it. In fact, he feels pretty great, because the time he spent was spent helping his friends, and his time didn’t feel like it was wasted at all.
And what’s more, all of his friends were able to finish their chores and free up their schedules in the evening thanks to Spike, and they all decide to have a picnic (the short-notice get-together Pinkie was catering!) with him as they watch the stars come out.
The moral of the story is that no time is wasted if you enjoy what you do with it, and that doing a difficult or tedious job can be finished sooner or made fun with the help of a friend.
