Pinkie’s behavior in “Filly Vanili” was pretty bad, but imho she was even worse in “A Friend Indeed”. Her big flaw is that she’s prone to saying the wrong things without even realizing it: Her cider speech to the frustrated RD, telling everyone that Cranky is bald or her long speech during Filly Vanili. It’s a rather interesting flaw for the Mare who represents the Element of Laughter but sometimes they just overdid it.

Then there’s the fact that Pinkie usually plays the role of the comic relief character, if she’s not the focus of the episode. As a result she often comes across pretty one-dimensional. Pinkie episodes, however, are usually pretty good because it allows Pinkie to show more of her character instead of being the Mare for random jokes.

Yeah, honestly, S4 was fine. But still, the problems with Spike and Pinkie persist. Spike’s character keeps changing from episode to episode, and Pinkie screams half her lines and acts incredibly outrageous just for comic relief; the worst example being Filli Vanilli.

Seriously, I wanted to fucking strangle Pinkie halfway through that episode. Every time she opened her mouth, it was either to scream, or make a stupid joke, or both. That episode is definitively the absolute low point for Pinkie, in the entire series.

Overall, I found Season 4 pretty good. Lots of world building, some new locations like Manehatten or Rainbow Falls, stuff from previous seasons being brought up again as well as some interesting new characters. The only big issue I had with this Season was the behavior of the Wonderbolts in “Rainbow Falls”. If you want us to root for RD joining them you shouldn’t try to make them look worse every time they appear. Therefore I’m pretty optimistic about Season 5.

@Anonycat: “another ‘Spike Sucks’ episode”
Again, I feel like I’m watching a completely different series than most of the negative critics.

Season 04 was for me the proof that they have ideas indeed, but don’t know on the slightiest about how to use them.

The Ponies Games “saga” was the biggest overhyped cocktease ever and at the end it delivered nothing but another “Spike Sucks” episode.
Derpy flying or speaking? The Gripphon team? Bulk and Flutter’s odd friendship? Scoots’ flying status? The goddamn games themselves?

Nope, all empty hype. And if they couldn’t deliver a good closure after wasting several episodes that even went through 2 seasons, I have all the right to take any “It will be good, fun, NICE!” hype with an Everest-sized mountain of salt.

SEASON 3:
I can understand your reason for season 3. They were doing a bunch of stuff that they didn’t know how to pull off well. They were really more of “let’s see how we can do this and that”. The end result didn’t come out very well. They had some good ideas, it’s just that the execution was extremely flawed. Even Equestria Girls suffered from that same issue.

SEASON 4:
Now season 4 is where we started to see some of those risks pay off. This time they did their research and started putting it into some really good use. Now there were some times that the characters performed badly, but that was because of writing (Dear God Applejack, do you always act this clingy? Pinkie… just stop __. Fluttershy is a doormat again). And yes the advertising wasn’t as subtle (rainbow forms) but at least they attempted to take Hasbro’s meddling and say “here’s how this can work with the plot, now go away and let us work.” If anything, season four is much like the show was in season 2.

I can understand your lack of optimism, as season 3 left me kinda questioning if I would ever enjoy the show from that point forward. But season 4 for me answered that with a yes. There will be times where we’ll play safe (and boring) or risky (and come out with a loss). That’s just how it is when it comes to writing long-running cartoons.

Just think of it this way: if they were any cheaper with development and animation, then we’d be watching another Johnny Test (no seriously, how did that even stay running for seven seasons).

Bottom line: I keep my expectations at 0 to avoid disappointment, but there’s no reason to not be optimistic. The show is doing well… for now.

If you think that the entire season is 100% complete before the first episode airs, then you have no idea how animation production cycles work.

With that “spring 2015” date, S5 will likely begin airing sometime in either March or April, meaning that the final episode isn’t going to air until August or September, which are 7-8 months away.

So yes, I can certainly believe that the storyboard for the final episode was completed today, if the completed episode is not airing for another 8 months.

S03: Massive letdown and “Oh man, what the hell are you doing?” season.
S04: Massively overhyped season with blatant “Buy our toys” and “Remember Equestria Girls?” inserts.

So as I said, I will decide if S05 was good or not after I watch every episode and I could see if they learned from their mistakes or if it will be more of the same.
And yes, anyone trying to tell me “It’s good” or “It’s fun” before it even airs? Not even going to bother listening to them.

also keep in mind, we have a “Spring 2015” window from the mane 6 teasers. They (being Hasbro) knew all the work for animation would be done by this point, give or tke a few weeks, so now they can start planning a broadcast schedule. Presumably they want to make the premeire and finale hit on big days for them and avoid washing out any of their other shows on their segment of the Discovery Family in the wake of pone.

Actually no, voice work goes on during/shortly after storyboarding, but long before the final animation.
