Actually, I’ve seen quite a few SSB fans who feel he is a good character. Even I do, as he has alot of fun/crazy unique attacks. (I love baiting fighters with Mechakoopas.) Frankly, while I was not to big a fan of him either prior, I’d rather have him in then Robotnik. (This is “Super Smash Bros.” not a “Nintendo VS Sega” game… Though, admittedly that would be cool to have a game featuring both Nintendo’s & Sega’s characters in them, and not just Sonic & Mario.)

The only thing I liked about Bowser Jr. was Peach’s complete unwillingness to explain to him she isn’t his mommy. Even she can’t be so shallow she wouldn’t understand about the birds and the bees. Girl’s been getting her kink on with a dragon-turtle king. That moment right there, I understood why Mario never gets anything more than a cake for all his trouble for her.

Besides, if you don’t like Bowser Jr. just change his “costume” to one of the classic 7 Koopalings. They’re arguably mroe popular.

And now I’m not longer wondering where those seven brats came from.

I also don’t see how he’s a “creator’s pet,” as the creator of SSB Sakurai wasn’t involved much in the Mario series, and the people who make the Mario games like Miyamoto weren’t really involved in SSB.

I mean more how he’s treated by Nintendo in general, and not just in Super Smash Bros.

Also, getting rid of Bowser’s famed “clown koopa copter” would be like getting rid of Robotnik’s Egg Mobile, or Dr. Wiley’s UFO.

I beg to differ, as Robotnik would always ride his aircraft and adapt it for every environment. Don’t know enough about Megaman to know if Wily is just as inseperable from his transportation. But Bowser has more often been faced by himself. It wasn’t until Super Mario World he got the copter, and directly after that, he was back to walking and breathing fire in Mario 64. Bowser doesn’t need that thing as much as Robotnik needs all his machines. I mean, without them, he’s just a rotund expy of Theodore Rooseveld with the inexplicable power of instant accelleration and apparently enough body fat to keep his organs from lurching about.

As for a Nintendo vs. Sega fighter: yes, that’d be as awesome as SSB. Great for Sega characters that have fallen by the wayside. Ax Battler versus Link!

I never got the “drama” over the Sonic cast really, as people don’t hate the “superfluous” cast of say Mario, (in fact, Rosalina, and such have been so popular, they’ve been getting promoted to playable in many new Mario games) while people start to bitch if so much as Shadow comes back in a game.

In the interest of equal representation, I will say I don’t get the appeal of Rosalina, Daisy or Waluigi (uhg, the name. Everytime you say it, somewhere an Italian commits suicide).

I like some of the other Sonic characters personally, but to each their own.

Since Sonic the Hedgehog 2, I haven’t seen a Sonic character added I found appealing. Knuckles was just a jerk trying hard as he could for some ‘angsty bad boy appeal’. And it all went downhill from there. I’ll go out on a limb here and say I’m not even a fan of the SatAM characters.

Plus, the G&W portables are part of Nintendo’s history (even older then Mario & DK) so I think they deserve more love. Same goes for R.O.B. (Whom was also quite popular when he first came out, and still has a fanbase, especially with NES-collectors old & young.)

Sure, they deserve recognition. I just don’t think Mr. G&W himself is very compelling because he’s rather limited to just his own genre of wristwatch games.
As for ROB, I daresay he’s even worse than G&W. I can understand the appeal of vintage items, but by my balls was he useless! He didn’t even get halfway as clever a moveset as G&W. And worst of all, he’s very much an in-joke for American players. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ROB where I live.

Yeah, but they had more to work with Diddy, considering they implimented his barrel jet-pack, and peanut popguns from DK64, and the DKC cartwheel attack as his running move. So he had more “attack” possibilities then Dixie, I feel.

Hmm, maybe have Dixie as an alternate costume for Diddie? Or would that raise questions about Diddy’s sexuality Nintendo isn’t comfortable with answering?

Also, to be fair, Diddy has had a few games of his own, like “Diddy Kong Racing,” and “DKC2: Diddy’s Kong Quest” which is my fav’ DKC game. (Even a few cancelled games like “Diddy Kong Pilot.”)
Dixie did get the starring role in DKC3 though. (Though, some fans didn’t like removing DK & Diddy as playables, and didn’t like Kiddy Kong.)

Didn’t like DKC3 as much either, but that’s probably more because the previous games were phenomenal. ‘Good’ becomes more like ‘passable’ when measured against them. I didn’t get to play Diddy Kong Racing, but it seems like it had some nifty stuff Mario Kart 64 didn’t try. The racers seemed mostly bland compared to Mario Kart though, moreso because they hadn’t even made Conker’s Bad Fur Day at the time.

Heck, R.O.B. pretty much saved the video game industry back when he came out. Though some have said that he didn’t always work the way he was supposed to, even back in the 80’s.

That can only be said for the American market. The European market never crashed, and I don’t even know if they ever sold R.O.B. here. Probably not, since it’s just added-on production costs the customer has to pay for, and Nintendo didn’t need to use the Trojan Horse tactic. It probably would have made the NES even less appealing versus the Master System.

@Jarkes
True, R.O.B., Duck Hunt, and Super Mario really kicked the crap out of the “Video game market crash of ‘84.” Which is another reason I have a soft-spot for them.

I remember Nintendo Power remarked that R.O.B. was “more fun to have/look at then to actually use.” Some fans just play “Gyromite” without him. (Which is arguably less tedious.) Still, R.O.B. rules, I say, and I’m definitely buying an Amiibo figurine of him, if they make one. (Always wanted my own R.O.B.)
Would be funny if they could somehow emulate R.O.B. on the WiiU’s Game Pad’s touchscreen if they ever give “Gyromite” & “Stack-up” a rerelease on Virtual Console. (But of course have options to not use ROB, as well.)

Y’know, I was actually a li’l disapointed they didn’t give R.O.B. a “Gyromite” level. (The opening/closing red/blue pillar doors & Smick enemies would’ve made for good gimmicks/hazards for the stage.)

Clearly, I don’t give enough of a damn about Pac-Man to follow his ’series’. The original was fine, even if it’s far too primitive for my enjoyment (yeah yeah, I’m a 90’s kid. Sue me).

I’m a ’90s kid to, but I still like old ’80s games, even Pac Man, and the Game & Watch games, (via the “Game & Watch Gallery” Gameboy games, and such.

Then remove Bowser Jr. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t heard many people liking him. It sounds like he’s a Creator’s Pet. Hell, the whole clown copter thing might as well be retired, because it made King Koopa look less intimidating than he did in the original Super Mario Bros., but this is going off tangent.

Besides, if you don’t like Bowser Jr. just change his “costume” to one of the classic 7 Koopalings. They’re arguably mroe popular.
(Which I think was a very clever way to include the Koopalings without filling 7 character slots like in MK8.)

I also don’t see how he’s a “creator’s pet,” as the creator of SSB Sakurai wasn’t involved much in the Mario series, and the people who make the Mario games like Miyamoto weren’t really involved in SSB. (If anything “Dark Pit” feels more like a “creator’s pet.”)

Also, getting rid of Bowser’s famed “clown koopa copter” would be like getting rid of Robotnik’s Egg Mobile, or Dr. Wiley’s UFO.
Plus, I like how despite how silly it looks, it’s been shown to be very heavily armed/dangerous, (heck it had several gizmos, and such in “Mario Party 9”) and it does looks threatening when it goes into “angry eyes mode.” (Plus, many do feel clowns are scary.) ;)
Also, Bowser does have his goofy moments. (Especially, in the RPGs.)

I personally don’t care about their bellyaching. And it’s the customer who’s king, not the third-party company. Plus, I really don’t see how they can squeeze much more out the Sonic frenchise than a second character. After Robotnik and Tails, you enter murky waters of the Sonic fandom. And no, I haven’t been a Sonic fan since the Mega Drive era, so I have no bias on that. I hate all superfluous Sonic characters equally.

Well, I don’t see to many customers begging for Robotnik/Eggman much. I’d rather he be a NPC boss/stage hazard or something then a playable. As I said, I’d rather just have one Sonic character in SSB, unless they do some kinda “Nintendo VS Sega” game.

Heck, some RPGs have you even handle a ton of characters like “Final Fantasy 6,” and such.
Plus, honestly, sense we’ve rarely even seen the extended Sonic cast, and nearly every Sonic game between Sonic’06 & Sonic Boom have been “Sonic, and Sonic alone as playable,” so I honestly missed playing as others. (Even Amy.) So I don’t see why people are still complaining about them. (I’ll even say the new one “Sticks” in the “Sonic Boom” TV show is quite amusing.)
I like some of the other Sonic characters personally, but to each their own.
(I’ll even admit I found Big the cat’s cameos funny in the series, I think they should make him the series’ “Derpy”)

I will admit, for as little meat as G&W has to him, his moveset is creative, with lots of call-backs to the G&W series. But again, fun as they may have been, I never thought G&W was cut out for more than that, and since the G&Wes aren’t around anymore, Nintendo seems to know this.

Actually, they have released keychain versions of the G&W series, in the “Nintendo Mini Classics” series sometimes found in stores in the past few years. (I even have the keychain G&W version of “Super Mario Bros.” IRL) and the “Game & Watch Gallery” Gameboy games are available via Virtual Console. Plus, the G&W portables are part of Nintendo’s history (even older then Mario & DK) so I think they deserve more love. Same goes for R.O.B. (Whom was also quite popular when he first came out, and still has a fanbase, especially with NES-collectors old & young.)

Well, they did their best for Diddy Kong. Both Donkey and Diddy had the same limitations as Dixie would have based on the type of game DKC was. Diddy just had slightly more exposure because of DK64 (which I didn’t play, but I suppose it matters some).

Yeah, but they had more to work with Diddy, considering they implimented his barrel jet-pack, and peanut popguns from DK64, and the DKC cartwheel attack as his running move. So he had more “attack” possibilities then Dixie, I feel.
Dixie did return in the new “DKC: Tropical Freeze” game to playable form, (which I was glad to see) but I don’t know if she has any new abilities in that could help inspire a moveset for her. Only time will tell if she’ll make a good SSB character.
(Wouldn’t mind her as an assist trophy NPC either though.)

Also, to be fair, Diddy has had a few games of his own, like “Diddy Kong Racing,” and “DKC2: Diddy’s Kong Quest” which is my fav’ DKC game. (Even a few cancelled games like “Diddy Kong Pilot.”)

Lol, that’s kind of what I was trying to say. I suck at explaining myself.

Though for the record, I love Phoenix Wright for it’s over-the-top…ness and how they made something as mundane as court cases epic; I’m not fond of it’s story in the least but don’t care because it’s awesome all the same.

I’m fairly easy to please with movies and games; it just needs one thing done really well to catch my attention. Ever see Warriors of Virtue? That movie blows so hard it’s not funny, but I love it because it’s got Angus Macfadyen in eyeliner and borderline women’s clothing, high as a fucking kite on at least three different drugs, who acts so batshit retarded that it makes the entire movie worth watching. Just try and not laugh at some of these scenes.

Well, I think story is a li’l less important in video games, then say in movies. (Unless, it’s some story-based game, like say “Pheonix Wright”) Games like “Tetris” prove a game doesn’t need an “epic award-winning story” to be good.

I sort of go back and forth on which is more important: characterization/story or action/gameplay. I think for me it depends on how well they do one thing; like if the gameplay is awesome I won’t think twice about shoddy gameplay, and vice versa.

Then sometimes it goes the other way. Like, the story in the new Godzilla was really good, but I just could not enjoy it in the least because I was so pissed off that Godzilla’s only in like five minutes of the film.

Y’know, you do see more “Mrs. Pac Man” arcade cabinets around then “Pac Man.”

I actually kinda agree, I think when it comes to fighting games, “personality” isn’t very important. They could give a character an epic backstory, cool-personality, and such, but it wouldn’t matter if he’s not very fun to play as.

I actually like Mr. G&W to. (And I admit I like the “Game & Watch Gallery” games as a kid.) I like how every single fighting move he has references a G&W game. (Even his “grab” attack animation references the G&W game “Cement Factory” & the throw/juggle attack references “Ball.”)

@cdcdrr
Not entirely true, as Pac Man has had other popular arcade games, (including his own Tetris-like puzzle game) and even console games. Even “Pac Man World 2” for GameCube was labeled a “Player’s Choice” game. Not to mention his “compilation” games like “Pac Man Collection” for GBA have sold quite well to. Pac Man’s a li’l more popular then you think. (Not to mention has had TV shows, a board game, merch’, and such.)

Well, for one thing I think Pac Man, & say “Duck Hunt” (both whom I was happy to see in the game, as I loved both games as a kid, being the old-school gamer, I am) have more unique movesets then Robotnik, or Dixie Kong could have had.
I couldn’t really see Robotnik/Eggman as a playable, unless they do him like Bowser Jr. in his Egg Mobile. (But then he’d just be alot like that character, and therefore not unique.)
However, sense SSB is mostly a “Nintendo”-character game, and third-party characters like Sonic are “guests,” I’m fine with just having one Sonic character playable.
Besides, if they had more then one Sonic character, then it would seem “favorable” to his series, (cue Sonic-haters getting mad) and seem unfair to the other third-party characters unless they get a second character to. (And like I said if there’s “to many” third-party characters, then it kinda stops being a SSB/Nintendo game.) Nothing against third-party characters, but I can understand why they’d want to keep them to a minimum. (But I would’ve welcomed Snake if they included him to.)

As for Dixie Kong, I can’t really see her being that much more unique a character both in appearance, and moveset. As much as I loved her in the DKC games, all she can do his fly with her ponytail, and attack with it, so it wouldn’t offer much of a move-set, unless they make up some cool new special moves for her, and such.

Not saying all the character have to be unique, and I do welcome having more then one character from each series. (I even enjoy even some of the “clone” characters like “Toon Link”) but still, we can’t expect having several of each characters from every game series.
Frankly, I’d rather have more characters representing other series, (even obscure ones like R.O.B.) rather then having Dixie or Robotnik in.
(I’m fine with just 2 DKC characters, and 1 Sonic character personally.)
Background Pony #DC0F
@cdcdrr
Ms. Pac-Man is, if anything, even more successful than Pac-Man. Which still doesn’t mean any of the characters have personality, of course.

Personally, when I’m playing SSBM, I don’t care about the personalities or lack thereof of the possible choices; I just care about what I can do with them in a fight. Mr. Game and Watch, being so odd, is one of my favorites. (Not saying my concept of what makes a good SSBx character is better than anyone else’s, just wanting it known that there are people like me.)

Pac-Man’s only succesfull game was the original arcade game. He didn’t exactly have a character or anything. Has Pac-Man ever gained depth, the way Snake or Mario did? I really doubt you could do that with Pac-Man. It’s not necessary, nor can I see it happen. That’s kind of my complaint with a lot of characters included in SSB WiiU. Hell, I didn’t even think Game & Watch was a good addition, character wise. No pun intended, but he is just so incredibly flat.

I’m sure people like their WiiFit Trainers and their Duck Hunt dogs, but the former I see as barely more than a training dummy (What am I saying? Mokujin from Tekken had more personality. WiiFit Trainer has less personality than an actual training dummy!). The dog… has negative personality. People can only have antipathy for that damn dog. When it comes to interesting characters that allow for great creativity with movesets and fighting styles, I just cannot understand why you’d pick some of those characters over, say, Dr. Robotnik or Dixie Kong.

Actually, Pac Man’s had quite a few games to. More then you think.
Aaaaand if we’re not going to count his games/sequels just ‘cause they are “similar,” then we might as well not count all the “Metal Gear” sequels to, ‘cause they’re kinda reskins to by that logic, or almost every game sequel to any series ever made to for that matter.

(Cranky Kong mode) Bah, kids these days don’t appreciate old-school gaming! :P

I’m not saying Snake & his series isn’t “great,” (but as I said I wouldn’t know as I never played them) I just think Pac Man is a bit more well-known, and beloved is all. Especially, by old-school gamers.
Also, if people think the Pac-ster shouldn’t be in just ‘cause he’s old, or “not relevant enough,” then there’s ALOT of other characters in SSB that shouldn’t be in then by that logic. Heck, Metroid & Star Fox only get a new game once every 6 years, so by that logic they don’t belong either… But personally, I’d miss them in SSB.

Frankly, I actually like how they don’t just include characters, because they’re “popular,” and I like how they have some WTF/old/obscure characters to. Arguably, because of that SSB is probably what brought back the “Kid Icarus” series, and encouraged Nintendo to rerelease ”Duck Hunt” for WiiU’s Virtual Console, seeing as “Duck Hunt” was included.

Still, it is a shame they didn’t include Snake in the new SSB, seeing how popular he was in Brawl, as I said. I can understand them wanting to keep the third-party characters limited, as SSB is more about “Nintendo,” and their series, and the third-party ones are “guests” in the game. (If there’s to many of them, then it kinda stops being a “Nintendo” game.) Still 4 wouldn’t of been to many of them out of 50 characters.

But Pac-Man only ever had one game to his name to make him relevant. Mario and Sonic had more than that in them, across different genres. And no, a few re-skins and ports plus a generic platformer does not a relevant game make. Also, Atari ate its own feces in the early 80’s.

Solid Snake actually brought a more strategic element with him to the game in what was mostly fast paced action that happened to spawn some of the most annoying ‘professional players’ a fun party game had ever seen. What would SSB have been if Sakurai only went for no items, Fox only, Final Destination? Just another button-masher I imagine. And I can’t imagine Pac-Man is barely any better than a palette swap street fighter.

I admit he’s legendary, but I want SNAAAAAAAAAAAKE

It’s my disapointment from Sons Of Liberty all over again (though at least this time I found out before I shelled out the cash. “Solid Snake is back in this latest installment” my scarred up butt cheek.)

I didn’t really like how it went up at an angle, so I kinda prefer it in the new game. (Though, seeing as how you can unlock customizable special moves for each character, they might have the Brawl “Falco Phantasm” in the game, correct me, if I’m wrong.)
As for the reflector, I guess ‘cause you can also use it to attack, and reflect at the same time, so it is kinda handy. (Or just use it to attack, even if thee isn’t something to reflect.)

I felt Dark Pit was a li’l to much like Pit, but he did have different weapons, and different a final smash, at least. Plus I can’t complain to much as Pit was a good fighter to.

To be honest, I never got all the drama over “clone characters” in SSB, as I actually like some of ‘em. Plus at least nowadays they’re giving them more differences from the “original” fighter. I like having some similarities & differences between them like that.

Y’know, I was kinda disapointed they removed Wario’s “shoulder-charge” attack (his trademark attack from “Wario Land”) from his move-set… (It was his A-button forward+SMASH attack in Brawl, now replaced with a generic punch.) I found that to be an odd change, especially ‘cause now none of his attacks reference the Wario games, except the motorbike. (They could’ve at least had the shoulder-charge as his “running” attack, like how Diddy has his DKC cartwheel attack as his running attack.)

I honestly like using Dark Pit more than regular Pit.Same reason with the Good Doctor, heavier character that feels stronger than their original.Electroshock arm>Pit’s Side B(can’t remember the name).

What’s annoying about Falco is that in Brawl, his Falco Phantasm went upwards at an angle, making it different from Fox Illusion. In the new one, though, it’s back to how it was in Melee, which was exactly the same as Fox Illusion. Though he at least kept his “kick the Reflector shield” thing from Brawl (though I never understood how that was all that useful as a reflecting device).

But yeah, I do like most of the roster. Heck, I even like Dark Pit even though he’s pretty much a clone of Pit in both senses of the word.

No it’s from “Mappy,” a neat old Namco arcade game. “Pac-Pix” did kinda get referenced in the “PictoChat 2” level in the 3DS version, as drawn Pac Men will sometimes appear to put the bite on people humorously.

Really? Shame, ‘cause oddly there’s still room on the character-select screen for a few more. (Especially on the 3DS screen.) Still, I can’t complain about the roster to much, as they brought back most of my favorites, and some of the new ones are quite cool. (I think I would’ve rather had Wolf O’Donnel over Falco though, but I do hear some of Fox’s custom special moves are similar to Wolf’s.)

Yeah, Shame ‘cause I like the “gold hammer” tune from “Wrecking Crew”… I guess they didn’t want the golden hammer to be to O.P., which is why it was shortened. (And also in case you get the annoying “fake squeaky” ones.)
