But there weren’t any hippies or elves trying to stop them from creating the park. And besides, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park is like a nature preserve as much as it is a theme park.

@Mr. Horrible
well, to recap what we were talking about, Supposedly, you said it’s because they’re harming the ground or they don’t have enough of that magic water, I was focusing on his intentions to bring cement into the middle of the woods.. so, yeah, you have a point in that I jumped from one point to another, but I should remind you that I only made a point about that little detail becoming part of his actions which makes it a detriment to the story both in terms of adding his character and as part of the plot device, because no matter how you look at it, now that aspect being a part of the story’s conflict does make it rather nonsensical.
Also, I’m well aware the Pavement/Asphalt comments from the in universe perspective were mostly nitpicks, I never meant to make anymore out of those just so you know.

In either case, what I’m thinking now is that even with this tired concept, they should at least offered something worth while if they’re going for this kind of story, I see no excuse pardoning them from not even trying to do so..

but let’s make an example of what I mean right now.. Take PyHD’s story concept, a lot of fans throw shit at the episode for one reason or another, but ask them about Iron Will and responses will vary in great degree even among those who hate the episode, because from a story perspective, he’s not the bully that just showed up in town, starts pushing other ponies around and Fluttershy most of the time specifically, turning the whole story about her dealing with this A bully.
They could have easily gone on that route if they were lazy, but they didn’t and the result was a great character to add the side characters of the show.

@toxicitzi
That’s… not at all what anyone was talking about? The question was “why don’t the deer use their growth magic to just regrow the forest over the construction site.” Nobody ever said anything about the personality of the minotaurs.

I mean, you’re not wrong in saying that Well-to-Do is a pretty flat character so far, but I don’t see how that’s relevant to this discussion?

I already went over this, it does matter if you look at it from the angle of how utterly uninteresting To-do-well’s character is, it’s an incredibly fruitful opportunity that they missed to give Iron Will another character of his species to play off of in the future, because this guy is a complete throw-away character.

@toxicitzi
I wasn’t actually asking “why not these things.” I was trying to make the point that if you incessantly nitpick every tiny little insignificant logistical thing, literally every story ever written completely falls apart somewhere.

It doesn’t matter why they weren’t able to do it. It’s enough to establish that they tried to do it and they couldn’t, and then they can move on with a story. They’ve only got 40 pages over two issues to work this entire story in. Within that very limited space they’ve got to clearly define the good guys, the bad guys, the backstory and origins of an entirely new race, the setup, the conflict, and still bring all of it to a satisfactory conclusion. They quite simply do not have the physical space to spend giving a detailed scientific explanation for the effects of asphalt and pavement on soil composition and how it effects plant growth. Because it does not matter in the slightest to the story.

They tried to do the easy thing. The easy thing won’t work. The story continues. That’s how writing works.

also I know they had pavement, I even mentioned both places filled with nothing but asphalt in that comment.

@toxicitzi
it’s not like this world has any other form of vehicle transportation broad enough to warrant asphalt being a thing and yes, I guess that also counts for both the show’s canon of Canterlot and Manehattan..

cartwheels work just as good on roads that aren’t cemented, so my nitpick still stands..

ok, let me just take a moment and talk about these examples back to back..

The thing about the eagles in LotR is something that bugs people because it is breaking the reader’s immersion, you can’t just add something like that without taking into account your whole overall story and all because you gotta have that happy ending, it undermines the whole entire scope of the story and idea of the story if from such a precarious scenario, they lived and because giant flying eagles suddenly became usable again.
It makes sense with the way they explained it, but it still sours the experience of many readers by how evident the intention was for the eagles and how they were used in the story, adding little to no mysticism about their existence, just the convenience that in the end, they were there to save Frodo and Sam. Even their earlier use was a lot better when they only came in to save Gandalf from the tower of Isengard, because for one thing, that was their first appearance and it had a good element of surprise to it, not to mention the circumstances didn’t topple their existence, but when they showed up again to save Frodo, it just leaned more towards convenience now, like there’s a whole squadron of eagles waiting at every little hill, just being ready to save any of the main characters from mortal danger.

That’s how the eagles are different from any other works you mentioned there, there isn’t a gun in someone’s hand shooting an erupting volcano that’s threatening Harry’s life at the end of Deathly hallows, nor is there a scene in any Batman works in which Batman kills the Joker.. next point is spoiler for those who haven’t seen Batman: the Return of the Joker. even the TAS storyline concluded on Tim Drake axing the Joker, followed by a storyline capitalizing completely on the fact and using it as a good, meaningful and suspenseful flashback backstory prerequisite of the current one. That isn’t just a great usage of the question, it’s a downright brilliant surprise to the reader and watchers alike.
but I digress.

more on this one, Despite the fact that Merriweather Wiliams has a far more fascinating Minotaur character, something I don’t think I’ll ever let go now that I think about it, there didn’t need to be pavement included in this story, or in the world even for that matter.. Yes, suspension of disbelief is all fine, but now you say it hurts the land and this asphalt aspect of the world is no longer used as a background detail, then how do you expect me to no longer take this seriously when the core concept comes back as one of the fundamental aspects of the story’s driving conflict? That is not how story telling works, when you present a conflict you make the reader identify a side to it, usually the protagonist’s, sometimes maybe the antagonist’s, it all depends on the story and how it’s being told. When there’s inconsistencies with the driving conflict of the story, there’s just technical problems from a story telling perspective AND YES, I know it’s just Asphalt, but it’s one of the many things the villain wants to do and by all means, we should be expected to take this seriously in this all so original “Nature vs Machine” type story…

It’s one of those things that at first seems insignificant and pointless to most people, but when you really take the time to think about it, all it tells you is the following, these little things are all the missed opportunities that the story didn’t capitalize on, like for instance, making a better villain and conflict. Maybe that one fix could have prevented the whole Deers are elves thing, the inconsistency of the Deers targeting the ponies and not the workers and so on.

@toxicitzi
Yes, they do have pavement in this world:

Other than the lack of most technology, Manehattan has all the trappings of a modern metropolis, including paved roads, skyscrapers, and lots and lots of vehicles that need a place to park.

The real reason though is quite simply that this is a story and if they did the most obvious, simple solution then everything would be over in 5 minutes and there’d be no reason to care. And that is not a reflection on the comics’ writing, but something that can be applied to literally any work of fiction. Why didn’t Gandalf just have the eagles fly the ring to Mt. Doom from the start? Why didn’t anyone just grab a gun and shoot Voldemort? Why doesn’t Gotham city just have the Joker executed by now? Because then the story is over before it starts and no one wants to read it. It’s called suspension of disbelief.

ok, now HOLD ON there. How does construction badly damage the soil? maybe you’re referring to the pavement made for parking and even that can be resolved with enough digging, it’s not like they’re coming here with canisters of radiation and dumping it all on the ground and then again, that in itself is another problem with the comic’s story itself as many others pointed out, the pavement for parking slots.

in fact, do they even have pavement at all in their world? isn’t pavement generally bad for a horse to hard trot on and have for the sole purpose of parking? Idk, it might be just me, but the way I heard it, horses suffer from serious injuries to overexposure of hard trotting on hard surfaces, something I don’t think would be the case for softer surfaces such as land, Not to mention, this world funds money into making asphalt for Carriage transport. That is an anomaly into itself, it’s not like this world has any other form of vehicle transportation broad enough to warrant asphalt being a thing and yes, I guess that also counts for both the show’s canon of Canterlot and Manehattan..

ok how about this
why are the elf deer complaining so much when they have this instant tree water? why don’t they just dump a bunch on the construction site?
