So I’m going to have to switch to a Doylist perspective and blame the artist for this one.
Yeah; the sand isn’t even being blocked in the images, so it’s more like she stuck some sort of really trashy foam-cover around them… like that surrounding a big-event microphone.
Which is stupid ‘cause apparently unicorn horns are sensitive to physical trauma, so really… what IS she doing? Was this something she learned from her brother but just thought she’d never have a purpose for it, so she half-assed her lessons on shield-training?
The mechanics of a barrier that completely blocks sand yet only decelerates air may be too complicated to maintain in the middle of a sandstorm. It’s a catch-22: Twilight has to be not distracted in order to remove the distraction.
Or we’re both just making up rules of magic. The show gives no data one way or another, and thus it comes down to clashing headcanons, in which case there is no right answer, merely preferred ones.
I mean why is FORCE still being applied? Why doesn’t it move around it while still allowing them to breathe?
Air should still pass through without force being applied to it… but Fluttershy’s literally being pulled off her hooves by the amount of force still passing through.
If it doesn’t let in air, then they’ll suffocate. And that air is still moving.
