I believe that I read somewhere that Gandalf’s original intent was to have the Fellowship use the eagles to fly to Mt. Doom, out of range of Orc army’s weapons. That’s why he shouted “Fly you fools” before he got dragged down by the Balrog.

Bilbo used the ring while he was in Mirkwood, the same place that Sauron’s spirit was lingering in Dul’guldur. Frodo wasn’t overly resilient, it’s just that he was the next best choice after Bilbo who demonstrated the capacity to resist the Ring’s temptation.

Frodo had Sauron find him the 5th time he used it, that made him go made faster, Smeagol/Gollum used it an unknow number of times but Frodo was clearly not as insane as him.
