Description

Recently went to a sort of “Nerd and Geek Emporium” with a bunch of vendors gathering under one roof to cater to all your geeky and nerdy needs. Retro games, comic books, trading cards, sports memorabillia, old toys, card games, board games, miniatures, you name it. If it has a geek or nerd culture attached to it, they’re all under one roof.

There was a vendor with quite a sizable amount of animation cels from the 80’s and 90’s. He struck deals with animation companies when they needed to find a place to “get rid” of their old papers since they had no more use for them. And so that’s what I got my hands on, animation cels from My Little Pony Tales (August 2, 1992 - December 25, 1992) and The Land Before Time (November 18, 1988). Pretty neat.

It depends. I am not an expert on production cels, but unless it’s from an EXTREMELY popular movie or show that is very iconic then you won’t be getting much. Even sketches from popular shows and movies don’t go for much. I purchased from a very reasonable seller who dealt with animation cels and sketches (Unfortunately he had to close up shop to focus on other things in life) but usually what I’d see is that animation sketches range from $5$10 and painted cels would range from $10$20. It’s only when you get to iconic scenes from iconic movies/shows and fully painted do you start to see prices rise drastically. Like for example, My Little Pony of the 80s and 90s was popular enough but it doesn’t really garner a lot of attention in terms of people looking for cels. The Land Before Time is a much more popular and iconic movie so painted cels I’ve seen from the same guy go for around $200+ depending on the characters involved and from what scene (A painted cell for Littlefoot’s mother running away was $200, a painted cel of Cera being scared in a closeup went for $350 or $500 I can’t remember.)

The thing about animation cels is that you really have to be at the right place and the right time or else you will just prey on the unknowing with exorbitant prices. A lot of people who collect animation cels already kind of know the game and go to reliable sellers who can back up their claims of their cels being authentic and sometimes don’t trust third party people overall.

I have My Lili Pony original production cels I purchased at an estate sale in Glendale, CA. from an animator on My Lil Production Pony team. Who would want them, what can they do with them and how much will they pay me for them?
