Absolutely agreed that this would be the case.
 
Sweetie Belle wants to be taken seriously by those older and more talented than she is, and to be helped up towards their level; and she’s sensitive and empathic, liking to look out for others and make them happy. Sunset Shimmer wants to be admired, respected, and looked up to. Rarity, meanwhile, wants to do the best that her (quite considerable) skills allow, and to be approved and accepted by high society. So Rarity and Sweetie Belle are always a little bit at odds – they always have to give a little, and work at accommodating themselves to each other – but Sunset Shimmer and Sweetie Belle fit together very nicely, without making any special effort. I never noticed that until just now, but it’s definitely there…
 
Of course, Sweetie Belle and Rarity both do want to make that mutual accommodation. Rarity appreciates always having a reliable gossip partner, and Sweetie naturally looks up to her big sister; but in the absence of her actual big sister, I could definitely see Sweetie Belle opting for the company of someone who was both driven and hard-working like her sister (thus her friendship with Applejack), and sort of effortless to get along with.
