Here’s the explanation about how Dragontown came to be.

Showing good dragons would’ve been awesome, if they had done so in a way that didn’t contradict the show in such a terrible way. Frankly, the problem is not that there are good dragons (that’s great and entirely plausible), but that they’re a comunity living in a PONY city, and that they relations with ponies. That’s what doesn’t make sense.
People saying the problem is the show has shown all dragons so far to be jerks are missing the real issue.
There CAN be good dragons, the problem is they can’t be coexisting with ponies.
That’s the contradiction, and its there and its obvious no matter how some people want to rationalize it for the sake of mantaning their idea that the comics are canon. Ponies don’t know anything about dragons other than they’re big, dangerous, greedy and that they can breathe fire. The also haven’t discovered much about them, because “they’re too scary to approach”. This, right off the bat means that ponies COULD have encountered good dragons, but never approached them because previous encounters made it the norm to avoid them, and probably with good reason.
If ponies have been coexisting with good dragons, then there’s just no excuse for half the stuff the show has said about dragons and their limitations in dealing with them. There is just no way ponies know next to nothing about a species that has been living peacefully in their cities, to the point where there’s not even a book about them.
So “a bunch of Spikes” have been living in a pony city, yet ponies in general know next to nothing about them, pony doctors don’t know how to treat them, and there is not ONE book in Twilight’s entire library that says anything about dragons because they’re too scary to approach. The show has been very, VERY clear on what “a dragon” means for a pony, and the comic has not kept loyal to it. We can discuss endlessly about what reasons they may have to do this or what kind of message/story they want to transmit using dragons, but there is no justifying this. This is lore-breaking.
No matter whether complaints are valid or not, some people will dismiss them as “you’re always going to bitch, end of discussion”. Even though the “bitching” in question is easy to see coming (given a sufficiently broad prediction), the specific complaints are often valid and reasonable in nature, or at least understandable.
It’s also common to dismiss criticism with “it’s exactly what you asked for” but that doesn’t hold up very well either. Much of the apparent hypocrisy is actually a result of oversimplifying things, such as creating a false dichotomy between doing something and not doing it, withoug considering that it could be done badly.
Troll harder, kid.
Though, as Number 1 Assistant to the Princess of Friendship, good friend of the Elements of Harmony, and honored hero of The Crystal Empire he’s still pretty special.
Can’t say I’m surprised that bronies would prefer all dragons to be violent, selfish, ill-tempered creatures except for Spike, the pony-dragon. I’m a bit surprised to see that opinion expressed so openly, though.
Here, he’s just another dragon.
Ugh, tell me about it. And then they get pissed off when they want certain stories to happen in the show rather than the comics.
Hell, even Spike has some greedy nature in him despite being good natured. For instance “Just for Sidekicks” or, for those who don’t watch the show, his appearance in “Zen and the Art of Gazebo Repair”.
Just cause they’re good doesn’t mean they don’t have the same nature as those wild or evil. That’s something this comic gets wrong by saying “These dragons are good and different from the wild ones”
The problem is not the good dragons, but how it was executed. In Dragon Heart the main character is a nice guy, but he haves no problem “chewing in seldefence” knights who try to kill him or helping a dragon hunter to scam poor people. In Dungeons and dragons the good dragons are as big, greedy, violent and prideful as the evil dragons
Maybe some kind of (true) myth handed down over many years?
Zecora seems like the kind to retain those things.
And yet Zecora knew what was going on in “Secret of My Excess”. If ponies, with their unicorns and their demigoddess alicorns, were too scared of dragons to ever attempt to learn anything about them, how did zebras (or, at least, that zebra) get that knowledge?
It doesn’t matter what they do. A certain contingent is always going to bitch at this point.
If they stuck to only doing slice of life stories in Ponyville, IDW would get bitched at for not taking chances or wasting opportunities to tell stories the show can’t.
Just ignore the crybabies and judge the story on its own merits.
It wouldn’t matter, at all. Because two different canons. I really don’t know how I can be any clearer for you at this point as I’ve reiterated my point of view almost a dozen times.
That doesn’t really answer either of my questions :|
But I guess if you haven’t read the comic yet, you can’t know how you would react should such an episode air.
Well now that I’ve read the comic… It’s like this was an absolute Take That to Dragon Quest, contradicting and/or subverting everything that happened in that episode. Unfortunately Luna barely added to the Story Save for the little conversation at the beginning of the comic and that’s it. It was pretty mediocre, kinda rushed in it’s execution and overall lackluster.
In comparison, I’ll stick with Dragon Quest and what it builded upon dragons and keep this comic away. Not just because of the racism, not for the apparent signs of SJW dragons, not for any pathetic whinny excuse /Mlp/ comes with… But simply because it’s boring, lackluster and, in my opinion, contradicts a lot of stuff established throughout the show.
Not a worth reading.
As the canons are separate, I don’t how that relates. The show said A, the comic is showing B. The comic doesn’t jive with the show. Why you seem so concerned that it does is your own hang up. I only mentioned the schism for the sake of clarity.
If, hypothetically, season 5 had an episode with a dragon city and friendlier dragons, how would that affect your impressions of the comic? How would you react to the episode, having read the comic?
And that makes sense. So does the fact that the comics wanted to write more ‘good’ dragons into existence. It just doesn’t mesh with what we’ve seen on the show, which was very specific on the interaction level between ponies and dragons.
@dynamicv
I actually have a fairly rosy view of the land where the importance of friendship is so prevalent, but if you wish to believe I think the opposite because I pointed out that what’s in the comic doesn’t work in show canon suppose I can’t stop you. The simple fact is that ponies have zero info on dragons in show because dragons are jerks. The existence of these dragons make that false. Thusly this doesn’t work with established canon. That’s it really.
It’s neither good nor bad and I won’t judge until I read it, but it is what it is.
The moral of Dragon Quest was that your species doesn’t determine your behavior, and that Spike doesn’t need to be a jerk to be a “real dragon”.
You must have a pretty depressing view of Equestria if you think it is impossible for more than one dragon to better themselves.
then again it seems implied that these guys are as much of a minority as spike. still spike is the dragon raised as a pony, while they sitll retain more dragon to them.
Spike has consistently been an aberration when it comes to dragons. He’s the exception, not the rule, and there has been nothing to suggest another like Spike has every existed and interacted with pony society. That’s why it doesn’t work with show canon.
@Background Pony #5507
I’d be surprised if there were many who didn’t. Even having not seen the movie that quote gets repeated fairly regularly on tv.
Wondering if anyone else will get that reference…
