Just means they’re a different kind of pony rather than pegasi wearing cool costumes.
Yes.
Yeah, peeps would do well to watch conflating “original staff concepts” with “stuff that actually appears onscreen”. I keep tripping over similar brainbugs in Star Wars “technical journals” which skew more toward games & spinoff media than stuff in the films. Hope we do see more batpones, token Lunar Guard appearances or no.

(But if they’re the only race/species we haven’t seen twice even as all the others appear over and over, but there are never any batponies but just those two, just that once, not even background appearances… I’m thinking that bat pony civilization in the caves of wherever is more “thought in the back of the head of people who are no longer with the show” than “hard-and-fast part of the universe.” I would love for it to be, but I really don’t think we’re seeing them again. I guess you’d have to ask whoever the current showrunner is what s/he thinks and if there are any plans.)
Well it says there “race” not species. Unless I’m misinterpreting words.
Having them be their own species would be a bit weird and unnecessary since they look so much like ponies.

Both Mitch Larson and Lauren Faust confirmed Bat Ponies are their own species.
Might be an offshoot, might be an appearance-altering spell. I’m partial to the first option, but one could headcanon a case for either on the current lack of official material.
