I prefer them as pegasi. Have been known to draw them as Earth ponies on occasion.  
I think the main reason is because I had 2 favourite background ponies before Sonata came on the scene (although Aria has grown on me a bit recently too; my last few pictures have been of her).  
Those old favourites were Octavia (hence the avatar), and Lyra.  
I always liked Octavia’s dark look. Lyra was more because of the fandom’s rendition of her.
 
So adding Sonata as a pegasus means one of each.

Y’know, considering the fact that Sirens in mythology were originally more associated with birds than with mermaids, the fact that they’re Pegasi here makes a lot of sense!

I think I may have a bit of catching up to do….
 
Only watched the first Equestria Girls with my daughter around 4 months ago.

I thought it was the ‘Rainbow Power’ thing they got in season 4, seeing as the EoH were taken away at the start of season 4.
 
Still, they did say Equestria Girls was supposed to be a separate story line, and the two wouldn’t affect each other.  
(Why do I find this hard to believe?)

What they got zapped with looked like the EoH to me, albeit stylized differently.

I still need to watch the film.  
I have seen the bit with the breaking crystals though.  
Not sure if my current artwork of them will change theme a bit after I’ve seen Rainbow Rocks.  
I suspect I may join the crowd that just feels sorry for them at the end.
 
Who knows what role they’ll play if they re surface?  
(And considering Sonata and Adagio’s popularity they should).
 
They weren’t hit with the Elements of Harmony like Sunset was, and it was pretty clear when they tried to carry on singing without their crystals that their attitude hasn’t changed much.  
Time will tell….
