This is true, but if you make stallions rarer than mares, then females can’t squander their lives pointlessly. Part of the reason males are more violent than females in pretty much every mammalian species is that males are a lot more expendable, biologically. Cut the number of males dramatically, and suddenly their lives become too valuable to squander in stupid fights, so the culture develops a lot of interest in socializing them to be nonviolent or to express violence only in service to protecting others, like Shining Armor.
 
In real life a matriarchy would be as bad as a patriarchy, though in different ways.

that does not preclude the nonviolent females from inciting massive amounts of violence, using the violent males as cannon fodder. they just use others to fight for them.
 
it might better be said that the most warlike societies have been the ones with a power or wealth disparity. the patriarchy is sexless.

In every mammalian species but hyenas, males are more violent than females. If your goal is to maintain a peaceful society in perfect harmony, keeping the number of males lower than the number of females, but not enough lower that the females would viciously fight each other for them, might be a strategy you’d take, if you have the power to magically influence conceptions so that fewer boys get conceived in the first place.
 
I agree with Discord here. The observed ratio of males to females in Equestria is probably being caused by the Tree of Harmony.
