Fun fact: phonetics and katakana shenanigans are pretty much the extent of what I know of Japanese.

I think it might be probably unrelated to that though. If nothing else they might just use a “ji” in place of it, that’s what they did for “radio”.
I was talking about Sodium.
“ディ” represents a “di” sound, whereas “トリ” is “tori”, which is often used in place of “tri” sounds.
Japanese phonetics is fun.
Was probably hard to say without a ディ、which I’m told was invented after the Second War… Or I’m guessing because I don’t really remember. XD
Sodium: ナトリウム, natoriumu (from Latin “natrium”)
Potassium: カリウム, kariumu (from Latin “kalium”)
Same story with Carrots… You grow up thinking they’re rich in Vitamin A, (i.e. Beta-catenin), and then Tomattos, and Red Peppers come along.
BTW: Potassium = K for Kalium.
