The sport that’s commonly played in the US is referred to American football outside the country, so, in an international context, this expression should be preferred.
The same applies to Australian football, Gaelic football and so on. No matter how big is the sport in that country, it’s always a local thing.

And cue the term confusion that was present back when “football” was the default tag for referring to soccer, even though many cultures from many times periods all over the world have/had sports that they call “football” in their respective languages.
Therefore, calling this sport “football” instead of “association football” shows a naaasty case of ethnocentrism.

What you know as “soccer” is known as “football” in most of the rest of the world. Since this is not a USA-only website, that means some people are going to call it “football”.
