My thoughts exactly…and people argue this and say that I’m the bad guy for not liking RD…I dunno, man…
My guff with that issue is that Rainbow Dash treats everyone that way, and gets away with it for some reason. Pretty much why I’m not a fan of RD.
This sounds like the kinda comments i heard from all the people that caused her to get censored. You’re saying her actually being properly mentally retarded is bad. And that is just confusing as hell to us normal people who don’t give a damn about whether she’s clumsy with an eye condition, or full blown disabled. Because we see Derpy, and we love her. And you guys, you see only her condition and nothing else. You see it and decide that it’s a bad thing, something that children shouldn’t have to look at.
So you’re not one to talk about intentions going wrong. And I do really hope what you said did just come across wrong. Also apolagy not accepted, you should know better than to bring up Derpygate if you don’t actually want to have a discussion that might get a bit heated.
And whilst I’m at it, the episode can be seen as offensive. But here’s the part that made me go from barely caring about it, to being furious. It’s that they LEFT THE OFFENSIVE BIT IN! The censored version made Derpy seem more “normal”, but didn’t lesson Dash’s rude tone at all. Dash was the only reason the scene felt a little wrong, the way she spoke. But she’s left alone. It’s like school all over again, I was deemed the one at fault for people picking on me. So it was me that got sent out the room…
They MADE it offensive to us. To be reminded like that, even now I’m an adult, that I’m still the one to blame for being picked on. To make those memories of discrimination resurface, and to reinforce them. It hurts a lot.

Exactly. Even in the original portrayal we saw in “The Last Roundup,” it didn’t matter if she was really “slow” or not, as some might have said. People have said that some people with Down’s talk like she did. So what? Are we supposed to be offended if a person with a mental handicap shows up in a cartoon? Or ought we be bothered by the fact that she broke something, which frankly is not unrealistic or hurtful in either case? I just don’t see it.
I did not feel like that at all, I looked at her as trying her best and all round just being cute…there are actual people like this anyway…and the show is all about accepting other for who they are anyway…and that’s what I did, I saw Derpy for what she was and didn’t even think twice about it. That’s her, let her be herself…
Again, if someone wanted to do something malicious here…it would of been not only intentional but also blatant…hence my comment still stands.
Though I do agree on that one bit; even though I do not agree with your outlook on the subject, I can accept that that is your opinion and that we can move on before anything escalates.

But if she were to be offended, she would likely be hated for her feelings, which would be dismissed as part of some evil plot to oppress someone. And her haters would talk about how they’re protecting her from “coddling” and how the real bullies are the ones who show actual consideration for her feelings.
I’m sorry to disagree, but, in spite of all good intentons the staff might have, it did come out wrong, from my viewpoint. Her portrayal back then was uncomfortably reminiscent of old mentally disabled people stereotypes (moronic voice + fish eyes + extreme clumsiness can easily be misinterpreted as a sign of retardment), even if by accident. In art, the way you deliver your message is always more important than your intentions behind it :/

I was referring to Derpygate, not to this scene. This scene I have nothing against it. Sorry for bringing up that topic back and causing some confusion.
Exactly, the only people who find something like this offensive are the people who go out of their way to find something to be offended about.
If they were trying to be offensive they would just outright say or show something offensive. The only way this argument would work is if Derpy, in this case, was offended or upset due to the circumstances. She is not, she is happy…in fact she got happier from getting the new outfit.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense should have been able to see that there was nothing mean spirited in the scene at all. Even if Derpy was flat-out mentally handicapped, that wouldn’t mean the writers have to have characters walk on eggshells around her.
I can understand some disabled people and their relatives being mad at Derpy’s portrayal though, specially before “The Last Round-Up”‘s editing. While it was definitely not the creators’ intention to offend anyone, the way they did it left an wide open door for not-so-innocent interpretations. They should’ve been more careful with that, because, at least to me, she sounded totally retarded back there. And while some people may go overboard with their reactions, we should all remember they probably passed through a lot of shit throughout their lives, and not everyone can laugh at their own misery with such ease, specially if they past experiences were particularly traumatic.

Mind you, it’s not necessarily the people you’re actually asking who would think that, but the people who think they’re obligated to have a good sense of humor about it, with “good” meaning “allows others to insult and ridicule them without standing up for themselves”.
You could just pretend the spell reads people’s minds and then transforms into an outfit they would like.
