Well, it was said that if he remained there(with Hope gone to Canterlot) that the next Faire would destroy him, so I assumed that this was him being destroyed by the Crystal Hearts magic, as it’s very akin to what happened to him at the Season 3 2nd episode climax.
 
It’s actually quite a funny thing. There must have been a kerfuffle between the Crystal and Umbrans at some point to require this kind of device, but it affecting an entire race was overkill as it didn’t distinguish friend from foe. It was one of the reasons for his hatred, both in it’s physical pain and preventing him from seeing the crystal faire with Hope. The object of the crystal ponies salvation became their greatest downfall…and then their salvation again :p

Y’know, if Amore didn’t know Hope’s talent was preventing any illness/whatever-this-is, Sombra would have died there and then, and her keeping his past from him would have been his death :p

stop underestimating the kids of this generation, this is baby play compared to the things kids see and play these days.
