20th century Soviet Union had a lot of propaganda and actual actions of the episode, all while preaching communism - so it’s being equated to that.
 
It’s kinda similar to feminism, actually - how it was originally pitched and done and how it’s done today is radically different (but the rampant misandry is still being pitched as “women’s rights).

I got that feeling because of the themes of conformity and unconditional equality, all being forced. The brainwashing, marching in lines, and propaganda doesn’t help. Maybe the economic theory of communism isn’t really presented, but the popular representation of the culture appears to be.

I struggle to see why the town is constantly equated to communism. It didn’t have any of the tenets of communism or socialism. In fact Equestrian society as a whole is more communistic then the town was.

Actually, Fluttershy probably saw that things in the village were “off”, but she’s the most non-judgmental pony you can find. It’s not in her nature to condemn or accuse, despite what she thinks of someone.

1984 was pretty good, and I think Meghan got a tad bit inspiration there, as well as other things like Jonestown. We didn’t see any thought police or telescreens though, so I think 1984 was just a starting point, and the real communist and Jonestown undertones were figured out and thought about afterward, with 1984 almost completely forgotten because it was a starting point into obscure ideas for leadership.

That shows up a lot in socialist critiques of communism. Orwell and Zamyatin portrayed leaders using leftist rhetoric to betray leftist ideals in 1984, Animal Farm and We.

Talent doesn’t mean knowledge. If we can assume that it reduced her ability to remember how to bake, then it would stand to reason that equalizing them all gave them knowledge on how to bake as well.
 
And, you assume that they would change positions. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I mean, everyone is comfortable with the way things are, the entire point of the village is to maintain the status quo, why would you go against the leader with something you have no experience in? Granted, you’d have the same ability as she would, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a wise decision. Anyone can speak, but that doesn’t mean they should run for politics. Besides, Starlight is like a prophet to them. Whatever she says is law, and defiance to that gets you sent to Room 101. Even if they don’t realize how badly screwed they are caught if disobeying, there’s still the subconscious telling them not to step out of line.
 
Then again, this is all based off of assumptions of what being “Equalized” actually does. For all we know, it could make every slightly skilled at everything, or it could make everyone equally terrible. While the former is unlikely, it is implied that they built everything in that village themselves.
 
Overall though, I suppose we can agree that it was a rather good parody of communism, at the very least in its common practices. Even if this in of itself was highly reminiscent of 1984 and Animal Farm.

I’ve seen that happen in many shows/films, where the populace is blind in some way to how one person stands over the rest, despite all their preaching of “we’re all equals.” I might brave TVTropes and read up on this phenomenon.
 
What I was kinda bothered by, was Fluttershy so quickly falling for the Markists “niceness/kindness.” I was wondering why she couldn’t see past it like Pinkie did. Fluttershy is nothing but kindness, so shouldn’t have sensed it wasn’t legit?
 
Not enough to ruin things for me. I enjoyed the episode quite well.

One thing I don’t understand how the villagers didn’t catch onto the flawed leadership of marksism. I mean, if anypony has the talent to lead the town like Starlight was doing, since anypony apparently has the talentless talent to lead a town at that point, then wouldn’t somepony catch on and say, “Hey, I know you’re suppose to be leading the town and all, but can I try it for a change? I want to see how it is to be above everyone else by living in a cottage that’s not aligned with everponyelses.”
 
From what Sugar Belle mentioned, and from what we then saw, everypony is still doing what they did before, just not better than anypony else. Either way you look at it, talent has to arise within this little town or nothing would ever get done. “Well, I forgot to bake the muffins because noponyelse knows how to bake muffins like I did, and since everyponyelse is only as good as everyponyelse, why would I bake the muffins?” I mean, seriously.
 
I believe they did a great job of mocking any communist country with the episode. Do you think it’ll be allowed in North Korea or in China?

I wasn’t expecting her to end up being Napoleon. I thought she was going to be misguided but well-intentioned.

I think we should start calling anything with the symbol Marksism, and should have the tag. I mean, granted, not all images with an equal symbol will be that, but the ones in this portrayal would be.
