So ALL of the Midwest charm, the shoestring-budget tricks, the witty remarks and repartee, the ‘campiness’ some would call it, was punched in the stomach and left for dead at the roadside.

Eh, I disagree, they still have that stuff in there. The low-budget special effects, and such are still there especially like the minitures, and such.
I like how the “door sequence” has been “updated” with low-budget stop-motion animation, which I feel looks even more campy, and cooler. Joel himself has had a fondness for stop-motion, so it’s nice they finally put it in the show.

I don’t know, which ep’ turned you off, but the series gets better, and there’s other episodes more slower paced then the one you saw, and the writing gets better, and some episodes feel like the old classic Joel & Mike eps. There’s even a few clever cameos in it, callbacks, in-jokes for MSTie fans, and some pretty good host bits, and goofy songs.

So maybe you should give it another shot sometime.

I had a similar difficult time getting used to Mike, when Joel left. It’s like when a new Doctor appears in Doctor Who: you’ve gotten so used to “your” Doctor, then this new jerk shows up, and everything feels wrong. But over time, you learn to accept that this is how things are going to be, and you move forward.

I never really had that problem with either Mike, or the new Jonah eps. I guess I just accept minor changes better then most do.

@Joseph Raszagal
Yeah, I don’t mind old references, and such as long as they’re amusing.
Glad, you liked the revival too, what’re your favorite new episodes?

I was a li’l wary about them doing “Mac & Me” in the new “Gauntlet” season, (as it’s more recent & well known, and has a more “so bad it’s good” quality) and I was worried they were going to focus too much on the “product placement” moments like most critics have, but luckily they had other material to work with too, and surprisingly it fit well with MST3k’s usual fair.
Though, I’m a li’l disapointed the new “Gauntlet” Season 12 only has 2 host bits in between the movie, instead of the usual 3, like the last “The Return” season, but I still enjoyed it.

I’m still taking a “wait and see how it pans out” approach, but I’m slowly warming to it, as they find their footing.

I was really really super-excited to see so many people pledge so much money to get the show off the ground back in…what, 2015? We and a whole new generation could enjoy new MST3k again! It was fantastic, and great that those who were to be involved with the renewed show were just as passionate about making it the best it could be. I thought the casting was excellent, even though I’m kinda luke-warm on the ‘Bot voices – did NO ONE think, “hey, these guys kinda sound alike, maybe we should do something about that”? It was a small hang-up, and I was too happy to care.

Then, for me at least, things went :( as information slowly came out.

It wouldn’t be produced by a small studio with a tight-knit group of locals staffing it, just outside of Minneapolis, but a Hollywood/L.A. studio, with “professional” writers, crew, sets, etc. So ALL of the Midwest charm, the shoestring-budget tricks, the witty remarks and repartee, the ‘campiness’ some would call it, was punched in the stomach and left for dead at the roadside.

“Okay, well…maybe they’d make up for it with quality in other ways,” I told myself.

Ha.

I waited for April of 2017 to roll around, sat and watched about 15 minutes of one of the early episodes of Season 11 – I honestly can’t even remember which one, that’s how disinterested I became – and just could not stand the absolutely inane, NON-STOP, seemingly random/unfunny riffing. They never took a breath. The jokes were occasionally good, sure, but your ears and brain never got a break long enough to realize it when they were there, so they were lost to the clutter of constant almost-rambling of stuff that should’ve been left on the draft floor. I started yelling at my screen, “Guys, SHUT UP for a SECOND!” They never did, so I turned it off.

I had a good solid minute of silence after that, and didn’t look at any new episodes again until this past January. But I’m glad I did, as the clips I’ve watched seem much more promising. It feels like they’re settling into their roles, finding out what works, and leaving out what doesn’t. Thankfully, they’ve learned to edit riffs out that aren’t the best, and to leave breathing room between what remains. I’m still not into the “shininess” of how things look, i.e. professional. As I said, I liked the original series because it was necessarily creative due to the budget constraints. Maybe over time I’ll appreciate it more, and it is reassuring that the cast and crew really do love what they’re doing.

I had a similar difficult time getting used to Mike, when Joel left. It’s like when a new Doctor appears in Doctor Who: you’ve gotten so used to “your” Doctor, then this new jerk shows up, and everything feels wrong. In my mind, this is how it works:

References will always become dated with time, that’s just how references work. In the end, it doesn’t really matter. So long as it’s funny, I’m totally game for it. If you want to reference Vince Val Gon (a completely forgotten actor that can only be found if you search DEEP), that’s fine. If you want to reference something modern that society hasn’t politely forgotten about, that’s fine too. And if you want to reference something that is currently going on, something modern, that’s just as cool.

My only rule: Be funny about it.

As far as I’m concerned, the MST3K revival is still on-point and is still funny. I’m more than happy with it.

True, and pretty cool he’s a MSTie.

That said, how do you guys feel about the Netflx revival?
I know some fans are mixed on it, (much like the “Mike Nelson”-era episodes, or Sci-Fi-era episodes of the original show) but personally I’ve enjoyed it.
Some dislike the meme references, and more modernized jokes, but they forget the old show was full of similar dated pop-culture obscure references, and quotes from previous episodes too, (WATCH OUT FOR SNAKES!) so it’s actually still true to the old series in my opinion. (And still references some old stuff like Gilligan’s Island, as well, so it doesn’t overdo the modernization like some revival shows do.)
Like the old show, some episodes are hit or miss, but I still loved even the mediocre episodes.
Plus, it kinda has more of that classic Joel Hodgeson deadpan style, as he’s more involved with the new show, despite the new host, and all. (Joel does some cameo roles though.) Crow & Tom Servo still seem in-character, and I actually kinda like their new voices as they sound a li’l similar to previous ones, but with their own uniquetake too.
Gypsy actually being voiced by a woman (Rebecca Hanson) is actually nicer IMO, as I was never a huge fan of her old goofy voice.

I think one of my favorite episodes is “Carnival Magic” as it definitely feels like an episode from the original show to me.
“Sweet freedom!”

I mean, sure, he’ll move your pieces around if you get up for a drink during a game of chess, but hey, we all have our foibles xD .

I love that moment during the episode so much xD . The whole episode is funny, but back when I first watched it with my Dad and a case of beer, we were both dying at that part.

Good, good memories =D .

To give you an idea of my relationship with my Dad, we would also get a case of beer whenever the SyFy channel decided to run a marathon of the “Tremors” movies. Dad would get up to go to the bathroom and get a beer, then he’d suddenly hear me shouting, *“Dad! Dad! Get back here, Burt’s back with the big guns! Shit’s going down, you’re gonna miss it!”*

I’ll have to watch that again, it’s been awhile.

“How about “Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders”? Another of my all-time favorites.”

One of mine too, hilariously, that movie actually has a tag here on Derpi too.

It’s been a long time, but I believe so.

To put it plainly, it’s the episode that features a plank of wood driving around on the world’s most chatty and irritating motorcycle, as well as a giant dump-truck fitted with armor plating and huge spikes of doom (not to be confused with Killdozer, an entirely different murder machine).

RIP, Megaweapon. You were the hero we needed.

It’s okay, man. We all wanted that bike to suffer as much as we suffered while sitting through every and every scene that felt sadistically torturous enough to include it >.<

That bike deserved WAY more on-screen dying time, for all the audience had to sit through.

@Beau Skunky
That’s interesting. I have yet to make it through that episode without falling asleep, or getting so sick of its boringness I turn it off. Don’t get me wrong: I LOVE the show, love the guys, Joel is my favorite host. But that episode…I can’t even explain it more plainly, and I’ve yet to really figure out why it’s my “personal Incheon.”

OTOH, a few of my favorites, again for reasons I can’t explain, are Rocket Attack USA, Moon Zero Two, and Project Moonbase. Maybe it’s my soft spot for Cold War flicks…?

I’m not sure, and I fully concede that Space Mutiny is a great episode of the series, right up there with Manos.

“Space Mutiny” was good, but I think my favorite MST3k episode is “The Alien from L.A.” (I even kinda genuinely enjoyed the bad movie as Wanda/Kathy was quite adorkable.)
Probably not a very popular ep’, aside from coining the trope term “dull surprise.”

I swear if I had my scanner, or something, I’d try to ponify Wanda. lol
“Where I come from-Whaaat is that over there?” (Totally, awkward, and adorkable.)
