Changing a places name is a very hard thing to do. So while its called the Crystal Empire out of tradition from when it really was an empire, its only slightly bigger than most duchies within the Principality of Equestria, which it is now a part of. The remainder of the land that was originally a part of the Empire was annexed into Equestria long ago after the capital disappeared. Its why Princess Cadance is still a princess and not empress.
The way you emphasized that last word made me think you were trying to make a pun.

It’s an old nuclear family era trope and really, the less we would see it the better. It’s not the biggest deal, but about as cringeworthy as telling a woman to make them sandwiches.
