Well the dialog and stuff in the OT isn’t really great it’s worse in the PT, having said that I actually LIKE that the PT feels different, of course it does, it’s a completely different type of story and despite the movies not being quite as good I like the world they build more than the world the OT builds, though I suppose that’s largely because of The Clone Wars series. Really I like all the Star Wars movies to at least some extent. Expect Attack of the Clones, while parts of that one are really good overall the shitty romance drags it down a LOT.

The writing quality isn’t all that great, the story seems to be just a bunch of random bits cobbled together, and the main characters don’t do a good job of catching my interest. It has its good moments, but it’s far from the perfect jewel of cinematic experience that so many people treat it as.

From a purely objective standpoint I agree with you. However, when we get down to why people like things quality are actually secondary.

The reason people like a movie is the feeling they get from watching it. Star Wars captured a feeling that had been absent from cinema for a while before it was made, and that is why it is one of the most popular films of all time.

This is also why people don’t like the prequel trilogy as much as the original trilogy, even though they honestly had a similar quality in writing: fans went into the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones expecting a different feeling than the one they got.

What feeling were they expecting? Honestly I have no clue because both of those films still feel like Star Wars to me.

Yeah, Star Wars just isn’t to my tastes. The writing quality isn’t all that great, the story seems to be just a bunch of random bits cobbled together, and the main characters don’t do a good job of catching my interest. It has its good moments, but it’s far from the perfect jewel of cinematic experience that so many people treat it as.
