According to the Wikipedia article, the Globus was a symbol of rule even before the Christian emperors of Rome.
The Globus in the show has a heart instead of a cross. Since the hearts in the show are reminiscent of Friendship Fire’s convection pattern, I’m guessing it post-dates the founding of Equestria, and symbolizes the harmony the three tribes hoped Celestia and Luna would preserve in the land.
Or more accurately Christian kingdoms or monarchies.
“Royalty based on faith” isn’t really an accurate rule for it, since the Chinese Emperors were picked and expected to rule by a Divine Mandate. Neither would it show in Arab kingdoms or in Muslim Sultanates for much the same reason. The Globus is largely a Christian icon.
