Yes that i know. It wasn’t meant as an obvious message, it was just like the implication that Tree hugger was stoned. A more subliminal message that writers had fun with. The writing story process probably looked like that “Hey let’s basically make Discord jealous over Fluttershy and then write around it to fit it into a message for little girls”

Even if they were deliberately making Discord act like a jealous boyfriend, they’ll never admit it or canonize it for this episode, for one big reason: if Discord is romantically jealous of Tree Hugger, it implies that Fluttershy is bi and potentially in a romantic relationship with another mare. As open to this concept as the adult fans of the show are, the moms and dads of the target audience are another story entirely. Hasbro would never dare make one of the heroes of their toy-selling cartoon for little girls bisexual. Maybe in ten more years. Cartoon Network’s gotten away with it, and Nickolodeon, but neither Steven Universe nor Legend of Korra are there primarily to sell toys to 8 year olds.
 
So sure they throw stuff in as a joke. We all know how high Tree Hugger was, but Hasbro staff will never come out and say “oh, yeah, she eats weed like it’s hayfries”, because they can’t openly admit to having a character who uses drugs (they don’t even admit that at least some of the cider Applejack’s family makes is probably alcoholic.)

Yeah, but toys marketing for girls and DHX are two seperate groups. They are aware of the adult audience with Shining reference or naked Rarity gag. Also none of the little girls would get comedians references. Smooze himself or Metal Gear Solid refeences were rather aimed at teenagers at least. The writers always said that they trying to aim at all ages with the messages. You can’t say that the premiere episode with sect or communism undertones were aimed just for little girls or Tanks for the memories didn’t have a message for adult about death. And to aim it at both adults and little girls need to have something to relate to. Platonic jealousy was a main message for kids, while overreacting boyfriend behavior a message for adults. In both cases they citicize the point of acting immature and out of assumptions.

They’re not just aimed at kids and many pieces of the storyline do double duty, but this is the entire premise of the story, and for all the stories, the basic premise is aimed at kids. Sure, they can take a story where Discord is jealous of his friend having another friend and jazz it up a bit for the amusement of the adult audience… but at the end of the day, there would be a lot more Discord toys out there on the market and a lot fewer “brush my hair” half-bald Fluttershys and Pinkies that even my daughter thinks look awful, if we were the target audience for any of this.

Pretty sure that was a joke. Discord didn’t blow up because he thought Fluttershy was in love with Tree Hugger and not him, he blew up because he thought Fluttershy’s friendship with Tree Hugger meant Fluttershy wasn’t his friend anymore. Yes, he might well have a crush, but there’s not really any friendzoning concept here; the target audience of 8-12 year old girls know all about being jealous because your friend is spending more time with another friend.

Since we already got episodes about more platonic jealousy like Gryphon the Brush off and family type jealousy like Owl’s well, is not unlikely that he might have a crush on her. It’s still a headcanon until more proof but is more believable theory just like AJ parents being dead.
