The ovoid (not ellipse, it’s generally heavier on one side) can be constructed from those two circles, and depending on how much a feel one has for the relative proportions, the two circles can make it easier to roughly measure out certain dimensions.

At least someone gets it that defining the body mass with a single flexible ellipse is much more efficient than with two circles. There is a reason the animators themselves use this method of construction.
