A man can dream, though…
To me the name doesn’t fit as “Bugbear” is a “Boogeyman” and I’m a native English speaker.
I like a fitting pun and all but there are time the pun doesn’t make sense.
Have you read 1st page of comments and saw the image? It is obvious now, yes, but it was not when we had only a trailer. This creature is looking like cross between bear (or even panda) and a wasp (notice the sting, do you know any bug with the sting?).
Yeah, I understand that most Americans (and even some other English-speakers) refer to any insect as “a bug”, but still it felt kinda wrong. Or maybe it’s just because I’m not particularly good in English.
Some did say bugbear, you need to look at comments more.
And the original mythological Bugbear is just a generic Boogeyman said to snatch up naughty children; actually, it’s sort of the original Boogeyman, as the words “Boogeyman” and “Bugaboo” are actually derived from the same root words that make up “Bugbear.”
That aside, when the FiM world has Timberwolves that are actually made of wood and Fruit Bats that actually look like fruit, I’m honestly surprised and kinda ashamed/ disappointed that neither I nor anyone else was able to guess that this thing was going to be a visual pun on a Bugbear prior to the episode’s airing.
But in D&D it is just a bulky goblinoids with the bear features and fur.
It’s actually a surprisingly valid pun considering there is an actual mythological entity known as a Bugbear (the thing even has its own entry in the D&D Monster Manual).
Damn…
Only we already have bumblebear
That said, let’s go with it.
Bees aren’t bugs :P not true ones anyway.
But it’s a bug.
And also a bear.
…Iiiii’ll take myself out.
No, lets not use “bugbear” as this isn’t anything like the mythical creature, it would be clever if it acted like one without looking anything like it but it doesn’t even act right.
