Artist here. My headcanon is that the feather flu is a mild disease, no worse than a cold, but pegasi avoid it like the plague because it grounds them. It makes their feathers fall out, but only once, and if Twilight had been asked to come regrow Thunderlane’s feathers (it didn’t occur to her to offer), she would have gladly done so, saving him two months of lost flying time.

Wait she recognized him immediately as one of the victims yet didn’t help back then. The hospital didn’t have anypony that could do it either. If they didn’t why would they not contact Twilight unless she didn’t tell them and there could be a ward full of sick ponies she could help…
