AA was founded by Christian Evangelicals with the implicit purpose of converting those who join. Same with Salvation Army.
Their doctrine of ‘one drink and you’re doomed’ comes from evangelical prohibitionism. Infact, it was founded almost immediately after Prohibition ended in the United States.
The 12 steps make more sense when you understand that. Particularly as the last step is almost literally “Jesus loves you”
