Description
Rainbow Dash, giant sized and in her Equestria Girls form, at a soccer stadium in St. Louis.
Look closer at the left-center field jumbotrons; this was a promo for an exhibition match between British clubs Manchester City and Chelsea.
I know this is ancient history, but…
This was a promo for how the stadium would look when STL hosted a World Cup Qualifying match (good for judging the interest in soccer and an MLS team in the area). They eventually hosted one of the CONCACAF minnows in the early rounds of qualifying - against St. Vincent and the Greandines, if I recall correctly.
Incidentally, the game was sold out despite the substandard competition and is a big selling point for St. Louis’ bid for an MLS expansion slot.
Here’s what I learned about St. Louis and soccer.
-Every U.S. team that played in the history of the World Cup has had at least one player from STL.
–The 1950 WC team that upset England had five St. Louisians.
-The MLS has been eyeing St. Louis for expansion since the league’s conception.
–Currently, STL has a USL (third-tier) team that plays in the suburb of Fenton: Saint Louis FC.
