I think you basically confirmed what I said. She showed potential at first, but her characterization wasn’t always clear.  
At any rate, we can agree that she’s great now.

Sure Twi was never this aggressive or mean, but there is another factor there to. Twilight came from a loving, privilaged family, and she had Spike!
 
Sunset? Just head cannon, but the fact that she was so ready to leave EVERYTHING behind is a big indication that Celestia was the only social tie she had to Equestria.

Maybe it’s in hindsight, but there’s more fundamental differences between them than that.

Alot of her characterization in EQG 1 was subtle. Things that could be pulled from the movie but were by no means shoved in your face; like her school princess pictures in Celestia’s office, the way she recognized the hu-mane 5 as potential threats to her dominance and shut them down early,how she learned everything she could about the rules of her new world and used them to climb to the top! Lastly, the contrast to Twilight, in that if Twi never made friends, this could easily have been her!
 
Also, I like to think that if she’d gotten the crown right away, she would have mind slaved the whole world, not just the school. :P

I think Sunset Shimmer’s characterization was a little confused in EQG, since that movie had to try to balance itself between a high school drama and a battle of wits between two mages. Rainbow Rocks was a more focused story, and that was when Sunset Shimmer really shined.  
That said, I could tell from the beginning that she at least had potential, and she’s my waifu at this point too.

Everyone raging about “Buy our not - ponies” and “Pony is DEAD!!!” failed to notice how great she was, and how much there was to her character; Convinced she was just arc-typical mean girl. Took a second movie with her getting her angst on for most to take notice. In a fandom that creates complex stories about ponies that had less then 1 minuet of screen time in a whole season, it was a little surprising, and disappointing.
 
That said, flash and anyone else… YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH ME!!! :P

I get the feeling Sunset would be creeped out at the very least. Which might be part of the point, actually, given that Flash might not exactly have warm feelings towards his ex, and this picture makes me think she’s at least a little uncomfortable with him using her as shoulder candy (thank you, Adam Warren).

Okay this sounds a bit crazy but how’s this story? Under the sirens’ influence, he decides to do…stuff with Sunset to make Twilight jealous, convincing her she made a mistake joining the Rainbooms and making her hate Sunset.
