To my headcanon she has a false eye, in “Where the apple lies” we see her with a bandage over her eyes, either she had surgery that went wrong resulting in her eye becoming as it is, or she was suffering from an infection and (being a bit of a ditz) she wandered into the hospitals corridors out of boredom. Unfortunately the doctors were only able to save her left eye this is why she’s so clumsy, she’s naturally ditzy but can only see thru one eye.  
Her eye can’t be dead or blind as it would be visible, a glass eye makes more sense.

Yeah no, both of your eyes are capable of seeing, so if there’s something wrong with one you won’t lose your ability to see, you’d just have reduced peripheral and color vision, and lack the ability to judge and perceive distances. These would also be likely to occur with crossed eyes, what Derpy actually has.

That’s not how how it works… Your theory comes from lack of medical knowledge. Cross Eyed people see but they have trouble orientating in space because eyes focus on different places.
