I think the reason that Rarity is so concerned is that she has managed to stay dry, hence the makeup not running.

But for fish, yes, actually: she’s fed fish to her ferrets before. Animals are demi-sapient in MLP-verse, with the exception of fish it would seem. They exhibit sapience, unlike their real-world counterparts, except for fish.
