It didn’t really help that a consortium of international predatory lenders used other people’s money to trap them in a vicious debt cycle of impossible-to-meet interest maintenance payments on speculation that the bottom would fall out of their housing market, as a deliberate scheme to loot the country of national assets– and squeeze money out of the German and French economies through EU bailouts which they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to reach– once it inevitably did. The Greek debt crisis was a manufactured catastrophe that only worked because of the weakness inherent in the Eurozone nations’ ongoing economic mistrust of each other and failure to understand the most central tenet of federalization, which is that the strong elements must absolutely and without delay come to the aid of the weak elements if the union is to stay whole.
 
…Or, hey, just blame it on the Greek people being lazy or whatever, that’s a lot easier than actually paying attention, I guess.

Greece got too much, they just flushed it all away and let their national pride hammer the nails in their coffin when people tried to get them to stop throwing everything they had away.
