Description
A bit of backstory for this. The early summary for Bats was just “Applejack and Fluttershy are arguing about whether to save the bats or not” or something along those lines. No mention of Flutterbat. My fears was that it’d essentially be Applejack and Fluttershy bitching to each other about the ethics of keeping the bats vs. eradicating them, with Applejack making Fluttershy cry.
Needless to say, I liked what happened instead.

I actually prefer the kind of debate this could spring up with their differences in character and motivation over going for gimmicky transformations. The episode kind of becomes forgettable once that becomes the focus.
Yeah, but I mean at a larger magnitude.
tl;dr, Fluttershy is mary sue
Kind of funny you say that since the argument here and elsewhere proves that it IS a huge argument that fans are still debating.

And see, this is why I liked the Flutterbat thing. If they had went with “Fluttershy and Applejack argue for an episode”, we’d be seeing this argument pop up a lot. I’d dare say it’d be in the top five arguments regarding the context of the episode next to “was it genocide” in season 3 and “were they justified in leaving Twilight” in season 2.
“They’re only here because they’re hungry! If we build a sanctuary for them, they could have their own apples to enjoy! After a while, they could even help the rest of your orchard! The vampire bats don’t eat the seeds of the apples, and when they spit them out, they grow into even more productive apple trees!”

Wow, Fluttershy thinking of a long-term solution that eventually helps everyone.
That’s not to say Fluttershy’s plan is flawless, Applejack’s solution is more short-term and gets results almost instantly.
“Listen, Fluttershy. That sounds real nice ‘n’ all, but every second we spend buildin’ this so-called ‘sanctuary’ is a second they’ll spend destroyin’ orchards!”

And then there are the people who insist that she COULDN’T have written Wonderbolts Academy, easily one of the best episodes of season 3, entirely by herself because it was too good.
I wish I was kidding, but I have seen things like that. People are so determined to hate her that they’ll make up s*** like that.

AJ trying to drive them away is a nice thing of her to do, for fuck’s sake. When wolves are bothering the cattle here, we usually just shoot them and skin them and hang their hide over a fence as a kind of ward. For all intents and purposes, AJ trying to kill all of the bats would be reasonable and just trying to get them away from her crops is really, really nice of her, if a bit ineffective and naive.
Fluttershy was stupid in this episode and I hate how it villified AJ for trying to do what was right for her family as well as Ponyville.
Of course, though, this is MLP - Fluttershy can never be shown as wrong, amirite?!
Blech. It’s this kind of thing that turns me off of her character so much.

And I was scared that AJ being mean and exploiting that tiny bit of detail about Fluttershy to the fullest extent would’ve made the episode bad. Fortunately, it didn’t.
Yeah, I can tell this entire situation has made Aj well aware of what kind of friend Shy really is.
I can certainly relate to anybody with a genuine infestation problem.
Though, once again, Aj just wanted them gone. Not dead.
Yeah, and worst of all, it almost costed both AJ AND Fluttershy their friendship. Flutters was trying to save them, but AJ wants them exterminated. (Come to think of it, that’s pretty dark for a show targeted for young girls.)
Because to keep things from eating your major crop and damaging your property is just the height of self-serving idiocy, right?!
Either she was stupid, or stubborn.
Yeah, what’s her deal, wanting to protect her livelihood and such?
