Actually, you can avoid the ads altogether if you just find and install .apk itself… On launch it will told you, that it needs Amazon Appstore for proper functioning… and than just launches anyway. Also this is the only way to play it if you’re living outside US/UK.

Yep, that’s how they getcha.  
When a user launches an Amazon Underground app for the first time, a welcome message in the form of an interstitial ad plays. In subsequent times that a user either launches or resumes the app, paid interstitial ads will also sometimes play. You do not need to do anything to enable these ads. Amazon configures the ads when your app is published to Amazon Underground.
 
The other big win from their end is that it encourages users and developers to use the Amazon Appstore instead of Google Play. With the Android market as big as it is, taking Google’s cut of the action would be pretty substantial.

Amazon Underground pays Gameloft/Hasbro to basically “unlock” freemium games like these. I would assume that means Amazon puts more advertising in the game to cover the cost, since most likely parents caught onto the “freemium” scams.

I dunno. Harping on the “free” so much just makes me that much more suspicious - there HAS to be a catch. Just like with Windows 10 and trading away all remnants of your privacy for a “free” upgrade to an OS with built-in advertising.

I played the game on my phone up until Twilicorn update, stopped, played again up until EQG update, stopped, played a little bit after the Everfree forest update and then stopped forever. Never spent a single penny, though.

I used a modded file that makes the Flim-Flam balloon popping thing give you Bits and Gems for playing it instead of paying them, and “playing” this “game” completely free still wasn’t worth it. iOS, you ain’t missing much.

They removed micro-transactions and gems are much much easier to acquire.  
However, this is only available for Fire tablets and Android phones.
