I dunno, then again, these things do bite humans - tens of thousands of times more massive than themselves. They got crappy wiring when it comes to picking fights wisely.

Me too! I hate spiders, but I got this lil guy to get over some of my excessive fear levels.. just trying to bring it down to normal fear. I plan to hold the thing as it’s a good species for that typically. He just molted recently so.. will wait a bit first cause they really fragile and aggressive right after a molt.
None of them are creepy to me. I find the spoiler-ed one to be kind of neat.
This talk of Uncanny Valley reminds me of some criticism of Tom Hanks’ three roles in Polar Express. The mocap for Polar Express looks okay to me. I never learned what the mane issue was. :T
From above they’re not too bad; the shell isn’t too creepy looking. It’s images like the one I put in my earlier comment and spoilered that show their underside that are really creepy looking.
But I suppose you might not even find those creepy. Like the uncanny valley, varies from person to person.

I looked for about fifteen minutes and couldn’t find any videos.
I’m gonna assume they’re like crabs and lobsters, and can survive on land for awhile but live underwater.

Well, I kinda assumed it given their natural habitat extends to 2,000+ feet underwater.
You got any videos of them alive on the surface? I’d be really interested to see, I’ve looked before and couldn’t find any.
Where did you get the idea that they can’t live in our environment?

I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure they’re just giant aquatic cousins of these little buggies that have a million names (pill bug, roley poley, potato bug, water bugs, just to name 4. I remember my friend from Utah calls them yet another name I can’t remember).
Looking them up on wiki, it looks like they’re scavengers/bottom-feeders that will also sometimes eat super-slow things like sea sponges and sea cucumbers.
I don’t think you have to worry about them biting, though. You can’t live in their environment and they can’t live in ours, even if they would bite :q

They’re absolutely terrifying looking - like straight out of Starcraft or Alien - but really they’re extremely docile cow-like animals that are closely related to roley-poleys/potato-bugs - the little tiny bugs that curl up into a ball when frightened.

yeah, some dont, some do, some only when stressed. my own tarantula has bolted a few times as well. opwning one is all about managing its stress level, they are very easily stressed out little buggers.
