I’d argue that that’s less egregious than Sweetie being treated as a consolation prize. A consolation prize implies that Spike’s only going for her because he couldn’t win Rarity over, and that Sweetie’s simply seen as easier to win over, but in the case of the issue being age difference, that’s a different matter, Rarity didn’t turn down Spike because he wasn’t good enough, it’s just that he wasn’t old enough, which means that him getting with Sweetie on the grounds that she’d be like Rarity but younger isn’t quite the same as her being a consolation prize.

Also, if he finally accepted that Rarity didn’t feel the same way about him and moved on, I’d think that the last thing he’d want would be a rebound pony who reminded him of her.

I feel like Spike wouldn’t even ask because he is afraid it would go like this. He would see going from Rarity to Sweetie Belle as an insult to Sweetie as if she was second place. Unless she brought it up first.
