Correction: She’s HALF-dragon. The other half is horse. That is literally what “Longma” means (“Dragon-Horse” in Chinese).

True, there are quite a number of major differences between the various types of Longs and Ryu native to the Orient and the savage Drakes, Wyrms, and Wyverns of Western Europe. The only reason why these vastly different varieties of mythic beasts are lumped under the umbrella term of “Dragon” is that they’re all large vaguely reptilian creatures of great power. Nearly every culture in human history has legends of some mythical creature that could, by some stretch, be referred to as a Dragon, from the feathered serpents that decorate Mesoamerican ruins to the three-headed Zmey spoken of in Slavic lore.
 
I suppose you do raise a good point, as calling every manner of horse-dragon hybrid a Longma would be akin to calling every hybrid of human and horse anatomy a centaur. However, I believe that the term “Longma” take a sort of precedence as they are the only dragon-horse hybrids to already exist in an established real-world ancient mythology (or at least the only one that I know of), though I’m willing to settle for the people of this fandom and website FINALLY learning that “Dracony” and “Kirin” are not even close to being the same thing.

I’d have thought it’d be Longma for Eastern dragons, but something else for Western. FA tends to recommend artists and commissioners make the distinction in the category section of the upload page.

YES!! A LONGMA!! THIS IS EXACTLY THE SORT OF THING I’M TALKING ABOUT!!
 
Maybe now the people of the fandom will finally learn the correct term to use for Spike and Rarity’s hypothetical hybrid offspring should be “Longma” (which are literal dragon-equine hybrids in name, physiology, and mythological description) rather than the inaccurate common assumption of “Kirin” (which actually have more in common with deer than horses in their original folklore). This is an issue that has annoyed the Hell out of me for the longest time and I’m glad to see that the proper term is finally being used in something with some major recognition.
 
Also, I really like her fiery mane, fetlocks, and wings.
