Everyone is fond of owls
If you asked Dinky Hooves what her favorite day was, she’d instantly answer “Wednesday!” It might seem a strange answer, but Wednesday was her mother’s day off, save for Sunday. Derpy would always have something planned for the two of them. It was usually something simple, such as a day at the pool or going out for ice cream, but occasionally they’d do something bigger. Derpy had once woken her up with two tickets to the Manehattan Zoo. Dinky would never forget that day, especially the orangutans.

But regardless of what the day held, it had its traditions, unbreakable as any forged by family. It always started early, as both were early risers, one by necessity, one by habit. It began with breakfast, which consisted of a trip down to Sugarcube Corner to pick out their treats, almost inevitably cinnamon raisin muffins. But the real fun lay in how they got there.

Despite their typically light frames, pegasi are remarkably strong, and Derpy, who flew through half of Ponyville nearly every single day, was no exception. Used to carrying a full sack of mail and packages, carrying Dinky was nothing at all. She’d take her hands and leap off the ground, wings spread wide. They’d been doing this as long as Dinky could remember, although how Derpy carried her passenger had changed over the years. It had gone from what was essentially a baby carrier, to letting Dinky ride on her back, to swinging her around by the arms. As Dinky had gotten older, Derpy was willing to take more risks as well, going faster and higher, even pulling off the occasional “trick” (though they were rather… amateurish).

For Dinky, it was bliss. To feel the wind rushing past her, to feel it blow through her hair, to defy gravity so openly was magical. Were it not for the cinnamony goodness at the end of the trip, she’d be happy to let it last forever.
