I’ll go with a mix of both mythology and reality. Fantasy tends to mix the two, for better and worst.
I think it’s based mostly in the effects of cyanide, those who were poisoned with that leave some kind of almond smell and purple lips shortly after death

Actually, i wonder if Philomena has that ability? It’s already friends with Fluttershy in canon, so that could be an interesting twist in this comic.
