They are never seen in the show anyway so thats a moot point

OCs should never stand out more than the main cast. If you toss in every pony in the show into an image in random positions, named characters barely stand out from background ones. Now put your average “bad OC” in that mix and you can spot them instantly by the high-contrast colors, the odd build or the never-seen-in-the-show accessories.

I don’t even know why the unofficial rules of OCs are “make them as boring as possible because any ounce of creativity is wrong and people will call your OC a mary sue for it”

People say characters in the show have dark colors like OCs, but they don’t. I suppose the right word isn’t “dark”, but “pastel.” If an OC is red, it’s bright red, and if an OC is gray, it’s…well, think about Thunderlane and Hoity Toity. They’re “dark” colored but still “pastel.” this is a really bad way of explaining it but the best I can do.

Well, I might dispute the “alicorn” bit, but we don’t see as many alicorn OCs these days, for which I’m thankful. Otherwise, yeah.
 
Nothing wrong with a dark and/or drab coloration - there are characters in the show that have dark and/or drab colorations. Octavia, Dr. Whooves, that brown-coated pegasus who tormented Rainbow Dash, plus quite a few generic background ponies.
 
Nothing wrong with accessories - ponies have accessories. Even the mane six sometimes have accessories.
 
Nothing wrong with multicolored hair - again, quite common. Full-on Rainbow Dash style hair, not so much, but two-tone? Not that uncommon. Twilight, Lyra, Bon Bon…
 
And so on.
 
But you can overdo it. For example, I do take issue with the really, really obnoxious color combinations… jet black coat with a spiked red mohawk and red eyes? Yeah, that’s not as “awesome” or “epic” or whatever as you think it is.

That is a pretty rockin’ mane.

The trouble is, each one of the things mentioned is not inherently bad … it’s just when it gets overused so much that it shows the lack of imagination…

I think the artist tried to make a bad OC and failed.
