Not really. The Panama Canal was under strict US control clear into the 1980’s when Jimmy Carter sold the canal zone back to Panama. Until then, it was under political, commercial, and military ownership of the United States who collected from and maintained the canal.
 
By the time the 80’s rolled around the canal was already pretty out of date.
 
Teddy Roosevelt’s activity in central America and the Caribbean though wasn’t too different from what previous presidents had done, and would do on through the inter-war years. The Banana Wars being a series of conflicts fought by, or involving US forces to maintain a political monopoly on the Americas and to respond to every incident that made American sugar planters and fruit companies just a little upset when it came to Central American politics.

Well that doesn’t seem very bad overall.
 
I mean Teddy most likely seeing that the Panama Canal would help everyone in the long run. I mean it finally granted a trade route that didn’t force you to go down and around South America, which I’ve learned could have some pretty quick and violent storms. And if Panama wasn’t go cooperate, then he’d say “Hey guys. I got this pretty big and powerful navy here, please don’t make me have to use it.”
 
Besides I’m sure Panama probably got some good deal of money from all that trade coming through.

It’s more than that really.
 
The ‘big stick’ in his ‘speak softly, and carry a big stick’ was an expansion of the nation’s navy to defend or even expand the country’s colonial holdings. Asia - and thus the Philippines - were ignored outside of the election despite his support in having those as colonies in favor of tromping about the Caribbean. The Caribbean was more important to him as well because he was building the Panama Canal at the time. The navy he built was used to mostly beat up on poor island nations and to force Panama into giving him the land for the Canal or he would go, or he would let Colombia make up for their failures in 1903.
 
Per speaking softly: he made the US a mediating country in disputes (settling the Russian-Japanese dispute over Sakhalin) or to move the US more onto the world stage in the early 21st century. Diplomatically, Teddy is responsible for moving the US into the sphere of the allies for the First and Second World War by patching up the remaining disputes with the British and moving the nation into a position to help defend their interests against the Germans.

I’m pretty sure the big stick policy was more along the lines of letting the other foreign countries know not to screw with the US or thinking that the US was just a pushover of a country.

Theodore Roosevelt gets asthma. He does it anyway, and gives asthma the finger from then on.

Roosevelt also habitually chopped down trees for fun and self-improvement, mostly because his doctors said he couldn’t because of a heart defect they were afraid would kill him under too much exertion. He also had asthma. Not wanting to be defined by these two things, he did his damnedest to be the most physical bad-ass he could be. He even cut down more trees to celebrate his first (or was it second?) wedding, and I think may have done something similar to muscle through his first wife’s death.

Theodore Roosevelt is unquestionably the best president ever.

Also, don’t forget that he wanted minorities sterilised and had a big-stick policy when it came to foreigners.

he was actually pretty progressive for his time. He was the first president to invite a black man, Booker T. Washington, into the White House for dinner.
