My Little Pony: The Movie scores in with a 92% audience score and an average user rating of 4.5/5.
“Blade Runner 2049” with an audience score of “only” 90% and an average user rating of “only” 4.4/5.
Considering that the MLP: FiM Movie had only 2,464 ratings to reach this, far less than “Blade Runner 2049” that is probably the most sought after movie from all the other movies starting this weekend and that had 28,119 ratings to reach this, this is a very impressive result for the MLP: FiM Movie already.
Especially because these are just the numbers and ratings after the early previews, while the first regular screenings of it have yet to happen today on Opening Day.
It looks very good so far.
The “creator” in question would be Ridley Scott, who DID have the idea of making prequels to his movie “Alien”. And both of those prequels ended up flopping critically and commercially.
So, let’s not act like Ridley Scott is above taking one of his movies and milking it for all its worth.
Also, for everyone being negative about this, especially when looking at Rotten Tomatoes right now, there is no drama tag needed. Keep in mind that the critics score is just one score and not the most important one. The general audience has to like it, not thirteen critics (who probably just rate it negatively because it’s “My Little Pony” and just hearing this gives them painful, cringy thoughts of G3, so they feel driven to rate it negatively out of principle), that is what counts for Hasbro, and the general audience LOVES this movie.
I’m not saying this won’t change again once more critics who actually judge the movie objectively, like a good critic should, come in. But even if it shouldn’t turn around, there isn’t a reason to panic.
Don’t overestimate the critics.
If people ridiculing you keep you from supporting the movie in cinemas where it counts, their negative bias and hatred makes you unintentionally hurt the movie, because they influence you in a way so you end up not supporting it.
You should get over this stigma and put some money into the movie at the cinema. If you feel embarrassed, choose a screening where you are likely not to meet many other people, but you should not stay away from cinemas because of people who might judge you.
The problem with Blade Runner 2049 is that a sequel was never planned back when the original movie came out. It sure was popular back then (and apparently, this movie is still popular today), but the creator(s) never planned to continue it or expand on it.
The only reason why it does get continued now is, like with other movies that suddenly saw a sequel after several decades, because a guy in a suit saw how popular it still is and thought:
“This movie needs to get a sequel, cause it will make us more money. We’ll definitely push for this until we found someone who is willing to make a sequel, because we can’t simply ignore this goldmine.”
I know that the director of the new “Blade Runner” is the same as of the old one, but this was most definitely not a creator-driven decision, movies that suddenly return with a sequel after decades never do so because of the creator’s decision. For “Blade Runner”, there was no creator thinking back on his old movie and saying:
“Hmm, now that I watched it again, this movie could actually have a sequel, it would fit nicely and really enhance the plot of it. Why did I never realize this all those years ago? There is so much potential to continue it, I need to make a sequel of this!”
To make a Blade Runner sequel was not the original creator’s idea, but rather the idea of a company who probably offered him a huge amount of money if he makes one.
And movies that get continued like this, after decades of being stand-alone because the creator saw the story as wrapped up after that one movie he made, can hardly end up good and in true spirit of their predecessors.
Movie sequels like this always feel forced, because that is what they are, and creativity can’t be forced, so those sequels end up being really bad.
Yes, the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Movie came to be because of the suits at Hasbro, too, because they wanted to make more money with it.
But unlike with “Blade Runner”, MLP: FiM isn’t decades old, but very current, and it is still going and there is no end in sight. DHX as the creators don’t consider it as over and don’t continue just because Hasbro continues to give them money. MLP: FiM is far from over and there is still creative potential that DHX sees in it and wants to scoop out, so making a movie for it makes more than sense from a creator standpoint.
“Blade Runner”, however, was with 99% certainty meant to be done with the first movie, by the creator, and only had one reason to return, because a company wanted to squeeze more money out of it to profit from its unbroken popularity, regardless if making a sequel would even make sense.
@Hollowfox the Stallion
I’m sorry to say this, despite being a Brony, since I saw the first trailer, I’ve been far more hyped up with BR2049 than with MLP. This is because I’ve been a huge BR fan since I was 12, and I’m almost 34 now…
To be fair, I thought both movies were going to be a turd, but MLP is getting average reviews and it seem we’ll be able to say with pride that this will be a well remembered movie.
About BR2049, its seems it’s a masterpiece that matches its first part. Have anyone of you guys seen it? I know this is its first running day, but I’m curious.

Harrison Ford i am exited for as for Ryan Gosling not really i didn’t like him on La La Land
Dude. You gotta see BR before seeing 2049.
if this was a completely new animated film without an established ‘controversial’ franchise.
Parents and kids without a chip on their shoulder about bronies and/or mlp
are gonna boost the audience score higher this weekend.

I’m interested in 2049, but only because it’s Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. I haven’t seen the first one.
As for MLP, too much stigma against it in my area to go to a theater at this point (in California, even), so I’m waiting for Netflix.

Really?
I thought it would have been higher?
That’s a hell of a derp!
