To be perfectly accurate, it’s actually ethanol that’s poisonous.
Ethanol is one of multiple alcohols that’s poisonous. Just to differing degrees. We can tolerate Ethanol and process it within limits. While Methanol is dangerous in any amount. Propanol isn’t safe for consumption, but small amounts will only produce gastric discomfort. Higher amounts will have worse affects. So “alcohol is toxic” is still valid.
@Vinyl Fluff
As little as 1% is that dangerous? I didn’t think it would do you any good_, but I didn’t think it was lethal unless you tried driving.
A BAC of 1% means your blood is literally 1% alcohol. That is normally fatal. In fact, you’d be dead long before you reached that level. They had no idea how he survived.
No, alcohol is toxic. Our bodies can process it and the liver clean it out, but too much of it will be deadly. That’s called alcohol poisoning. As you drink more and more, the alcohol starts making its way into your brain. Once it reaches a certain point, it starts affecting you. This is where the well-known effects come from. Once you’ve reached the black-out/memory loss stage, you’re in dangerous, dangerous territory. If you keep drinking it’ll absorb into the centers responsible for your breathing and some other autonomous functions. At this point you’re dead.
The man I spoke of had over twice that limit (I said “many” below, which is a slight exaggeration, but still. Double the lethal limit is still double the lethal limit.) Even though he survived, he was pretty messed up and in a coma for weeks. But that was an extreme exception. He shouldn’t have even been breathing, let along walking at that point.
How about 84 shots of espresso? Seriously, I know of someone who once drank a big cup of Cuban coffee. They told me that the restaurant staff told them that was basically what they drank.
Keyword was average. The average person will OD on caffeine at that amount. If a person has more body mass and thus more blood, it will take more to have the same effect (this is why animal tranquilizers are based on body weight.) Or if they’ve habituated over time they could probably tolerate higher doses.
There’s always exceptions as well. The world record for blood alcohol level where the person survived was 1%. As in his blood was 1% alcohol. This is many times over the fatal limit, but he somehow survived. he stumbled into a hospital and said he was sick, and then collapsed. He was in a coma for weeks but survived.
Pretty much everything is toxic in sufficient quantities. 55 cups of coffee in a row will kill the average person from caffeine. [/bq]

Yeah, a lot of people exaggerate the effects of chocolate on dogs these days. I saw a movie from the 80’s (Beethoven, I think) where the dog eats a chocolate chip cookie. If that happened in a modern movie, the people would be screaming animal abuse.
@Background Pony #4659
Why is chocolate so poisonous to animals then, and only to humans if we consume half our body weight in it?
There’s avian caretaker specialists and vets who utilize peanut M&Ms as treats to their birds, along with other assorted trail mix items, allowing them to chip away at the chocolate to reach the desired inside. There are also dog owners who have seen their canine pets devour whole chunks of chocolate bars, etc. and live long lives.
The key is how much, what kind of chocolate, and if the specific individual is sensitive to it. What happens is that people look at scientific data stating “can lead to”, “might”, “possibly may cause” and then taking it to full effect to mean “it will”. So most advise to just err on the side of caution.
According to a site I found, an average 10 year old kid would need to consume about 26 pounds of chocolate before they start feeling the effects of Theobromine poisoning.
Not sure why the site focused on a kid.
Pretty much everything is toxic in sufficient quantities. 55 cups of coffee in a row will kill the average person from caffeine. The Chinese used to practice a method of painful, tortured execution by forcing the person to eat a pound of salt. It dehydrated them and killed them. And even water itself can kill you if you drink too much. At a certain point your body cannot process it anymore, and your cells have their interiors overfill with water and they basically drown.

Probably embarrassed that his name’s constantly misspelled, as it should’ve been Owloysius.

He’s appeared in the series 11 times since Philomena’s last (first, only, lone, sole, single, solitary) appearance, though apparently his most recent appearance was way back in s05e22 (“What About Discord?”).

Chocolate has a chemical in that is toxic to everything. It’s just a human can never consume the amount needed for it be lethal (they would die from something else long before that happens).
I guess that’s right.

But this is pretty cute to me.
Because we break down the poison faster than most animals.
