I don’t see why background ponies couldn’t carry a one-shot, especially if you used a couple, though it might be a simpler story than using main or secondary characters.
 
I’m sure it wouldn’t be too hard to come up with a story about Vinyl Scratch and Octavia interacting via their differences, for instance.

This should be good. Six is a little hard to handle, so I always want to see interaction between two, perhaps it will give a better idea of the relationship between each of the mane 6.
