I’m pretty sure Zipp’s teasing is supposed to be playful and friendly, not maliciously demeaning him. Especially now that they’re good friends.
That’s how I always saw it
“Toying with his emotions” sounds a lot meaner than how Zipp’s teasing actually is.
I think there’s been shipping fuel from Hitch’s side, too. Particularly in Chapter 1, where he sounds like he’s asking her out when he’s suggesting plans to hang out. (The “You don’t have to be shy, we’re pals” line almost sounds flirtatious–) There’s also how flustered he looks when Zipp teases him here.
