Well, considering some people think they’re already canon…

@SquiggyBomb
The CMC have rebuilt a treehouse, designed and sewn costumes, and built a parade float with a device to sabotage the steering after a timer had gone off. How old are they?

I thought the original tweet only meant Spike x Rarity moments at least and an episode at most. Every season has one, even season 3 (SayS that originally had Rarity in it replaced by AJ.)

Wait, people thought they were gonna be canon in S4?

The tweet simply says that Canterlot was enjoying a time of peace before the Changeling Invasion in Canterlot Wedding. It seems more likely that the invasion in the comic occurred a few decades ago.

I see, well thanks that actually makes a lot more sense. First time I looked, I thought they were the forces (which made me confused about how old inkwell is), I appreciate the info.

Granny smith still seems to be about 100 yrs old though, since she was around when ponyville was founded, and winter wrap up was said to have been around for 100 yrs. So I guess it’s really hard to say how old the ponies can live (does the tweet actually say how long ago celestia and inkwell fought the army?).

Well Granny smith helped create ponyville. That was about 100 yrs ago (the amount of time twilight said was when they created winter wrap when ponyville was founded).

And in the recent my little pony comic (celestia’s micro issue) Celestia’s friend inkwell was shown in a flashback fighting alongside celestia, fighting what appeared to be the nightmare forces that helped nightmare moon (y’know the ones we saw in the nightmare rarity arc). That happened 1,000 yrs ago, and yet she’s still alive. Elderly, but alive. Which leads me to think that ponies really do age differently than normal people. Dragons like spike can live to be 1,000 or more yrs old.

So seeing how odd pony aging actually can be, it may actually be possible for them to have a relationship for sometime at least.

But this is just an opinion, it’s alright if you don’t agree with it.

Given that they act human enough, we most certainly can. Also, I was even being ludicrously generous. Most mythos have dragons living for hundreds or thousands of years, needing to be several hundred years old for mating.

You more or less asked me why the age thing was significant and I told you. If your fancy your headcanon that much then by all means. I may think you’re bloody loony for it, but clearly you’re not the only one who supports the ship so I can just bugger off. Just don’t tell me I’m wrong for not supporting it because I have actual hard reasons for believing it could never actually work even if Rarity regarded Spike as anything more than a little brother.

One: We have no idea how pony aging actually works.
Two: We have no idea how dragon aging actually works.
These are not human characters. We can’t use human ideas and concepts to judge them.

Okay, I’ll bite. Let’s delve into analyzing this age problem that some apparently seem to think is “no big deal”.

Spike was hatched by Twilight when she was a filly. For sake of argument, let’s go with the 8 year number you tossed out. Assuming the Mane 6 are roughly all the same age range give or take a couple years (since it’s established Fluttershy is a year older than Pinkie so they aren’t all the exact same age) and also assuming they are, indeed, fully adult mares I would put their ages being early 20’s or so, with maybe 23-24 being the oldest any of them are (again, likely Fluttershy.) So Rarity is perhaps 21 or so with Spike being, at oldest, 13 years old. Now IF ponies in Equestria age similarly to humans (very likely all things considered) then yes, there would be nothing all that amiss if Rarity did develop a romantic relationship with Spike in a few more years. Nothing wrong with that. If he were also a pony.

At 13 years old, Spike is still considered a baby dragon. This is established rather thoroughly in the show’s canon. Now since he can walk about on his own, that would put him pretty much as a toddler for his race. Put into perspective, no matter how smart he might act he is physically and emotionally the equivalent of a 3-year old, give or take a year at most. If 13 dragon years translates to being 3 years old as a pony, then for Spike to be a viable romantic partner, physically AND emotionally, he would need to be a dragon in what would be considered his late teens. So let’s assume he’d need to be 18 in dragon years. If 13 pony years is roughly equivalent to 3 dragon years, then 18 dragon years would be somewhere around 78 pony years. If Rarity is 21 now, she would have to live to be in her mid- to late 80s for Spike to be “ready” for a romantic relationship. But hey, okay, let’s tick it back a couple notches just in case Spike is “mature” for a teenager of his kind. And let’s throw concerns about age of consent out the window too, pesky things they are. Let’s say 16 dragon years instead. You’re still looking at almost 70 pony years which, in turn, would put Rarity at her late 70s to early 80s.

There is no way Rarity would wait that long to have a romantic relationship with someone. There is no way ANYONE would. Oh, and before anyone brings up the “spontaneous growth” point again, let’s again refer to the canon. Spike only spontaneously grows when he acts like a complete asshole and feeds his greed. The moment he realized what he was doing and stopped himself, he was back to being a baby again. Do you really think Rarity would want to be with Asshole Spike?

tl;dr - Numbers don’t lie. Rarity would be dead and buried before Spike was actually ready for a relationship, and artificially advancing his maturity would mean Rarity is stuck with an asshole for a boyfriend.

Why does everyone always have to start some stupid war over Sparity? Can’t we just let each other enjoy their fun and enjoy loose facts about season 4? I mean, if you don’t like it, go the fuck somewhere else. No one is telling you guys to support the ship.

She is at most 7 years older than him. That isn’t that much of an age gap.
Also wouldn’t dating a younger guy be something that Rarity would totally do?

Welcome to the internet where things that make sense don’t and things that don’t do. Why because people are evil.

And yeah people are hanging onto that age thing a lot.

I think the whole Spike being a baby dragon thing is being played out too much.

He’s a dragon that grows by behavior rather than by age, so that’s to take into account, and he’s obviously a lot older than the CMC, since he can do duties for royalty. He controls that behavior as well. It takes alot to do that.

Sure the subtle friendship is understandable, being the show that it is, but I really think that people who love shipping ponies of the same sex and producing offspring god knows how are forgetting this is still a well done kids show.
